CPU overload play HEVC H.265

PostMon May 05, 2025 10:19 am

HI
How does the program allocate hardware resources when editing a multicam?
I have a graphics card dedicated only for rendering, and all monitors are connected to the integrated graphics (as recommended here).
I urgently took home video editing from 4 cameras from work, and the 4th was in a HEVC H.265 (Only one camera, the remaining 264).
I set 720p in the project settings to make the job easier.
The Rayzen 5600G processor was overloaded when watching a multicam in a small window. Everything was wildly slow, and after 4 days the processor just died. although all the settings are standard and the cooling is excellent.
The 2nd GPU is the RTX3060, but if the monitors are not connected to it, then DR puts everything on the CPU?

Where did you see that the monitors should be connected to the CPU ?

Unless that 265 is 4.2.2 the 3060 should be able to handle it. Assuming the 264 is 4.2.0

What was the decode setting in Resolve?

If you're only running on the CPU either you had the decode setting wrong or the files are 4.2.2. I can't think of any other reason :?:

The processor dieing implies something was wrong with your setup. Are you sure the cooling was okay? Did you see it heating up? Hear the fans ramping?

if you connect monitors to a discrete GPU, then DR may crash due to lack of memory, since the browser, YouTube, and chats are hanging on different monitors...

In DR itself, the settings are made on RTX and it is disconnected from Windows applications. That's how DR stopped being very buggy when working in Fusion. This was recommended back in the discussions of the 18th version.

with 264, it always worked without problems in 3 threads. and then the operator took an additional 4th angle at 265 on the FX30.
and in small pieces in a 2-hour movie. and all the work has slowed down a lot.

at first I thought that the SSD was dying, but the load on it was small, but the CPU cooler started to take off with each appearance of the 4th angle.

All your monitors should be connected to the RTX 3060.
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

Yeah, unfortunately that's a known limitation. If your displays aren't connected to the discrete GPU, DaVinci Resolve might not fully utilize it for decoding/playback, especially with HEVC content. HEVC is particularly CPU-intensive when hardware decoding isn’t properly engaged.

For best performance with multicam (especially with mixed codecs), make sure to enable hardware acceleration in Resolve preferences, and consider connecting at least one display to the RTX 3060 to force Resolve to prioritize it. Also, transcoding the HEVC clip to an easier format like DNxHR or ProRes might help reduce CPU stress during editing.
Hi there! I'm Zu. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm excited to connect and get to know each other better. Let's have a great conversation and share wonderful experiences together!
