Pocket 6k Pro questions

PostTue May 06, 2025 2:39 pm

So I bought my son a Pocket 6k Pro and a set of primes as his 18th birthday present.

I have a few questions that hopefully you guys can help with.

First, the software is 8.1. Has 8.6 never come out of beta? It's been a year.

Second, he has put on a Smallrig cage. He wants to remove the rubber cover over the USB, HDMI, and Microphone connectors. Is there a way to do this without damaging the cover in case he wants to put it back on in the future?

I am also hearing conflicting answers on using a T7 drive vs a T7 shield. I have a shield for my Pyxis, but he has a regular T7. I think he said it doesn't work on the Pocket 4k they have at school, but it seems to work on the Pocket 6k Pro. Should he expect any issues using the regular T7?

Also, I need a recommendation for a case where he could leave the cage on. Does anyone have a similar setup and can recommend something?

Thanks,
Cheers,
Corey

Hi Corey!

Congrats on this wonderful present for your son! I can only comment on the rubber cover removal - pull them quite hard as close to the attachement as you can grab them and they will come out. To put them back in use a small screw driver to push the rubber head back through the opening. Takes a bit of time and feel, but as long as you are not doing very often all should be good.

The T7 isn't supported but some get lucky, but they're unstable. Neither support high speeds.

Thanks, he was able to return the T7, and we have a shield coming from Amazon.

OK, the T7 Shield arrived, and I tried it with the Blackmagic Disk Speed test. I wasn't impressed with this T7 Shield out of the box. It was significantly slower than my T7 shield I use with my Pyxis, until I realized the new one was formatted as ExFAT by default. Reformatting as Mac OS Extended, now the new T7 Shield passes for everything except 12k DCI 60, which the Pocket 6K pro does not support or need.

Now, back to the other question, the Pocket 6k Pro software is 8.1. Does anyone know when 8.6 might come out of Beta?

Also, a new question: what solutions for V-Mount batteries work with the Smallrig cage that don't block the built-in screen?

Thanks,
Cheers,
Corey
