May10th: would Resolve 20 Studio Beta 3 be usable in prod ?

PostSat May 10, 2025 9:56 am

Hey

Right to the point : I just finished a long doc and the client is satisfied, then I'm about to start more or less simultaneously 2 other projects. They have what I'd call a sort of common profile, as one is a funny and SciFi commercial, the other one is a pretty well known rock band video clip, featuring lots of CGI and compositing (well I'm into this anyway).

Personally I've never ever used a beta in pro productions, and if I had to answer myself, it would be a bold NO :)

Now, 2 points ring a bell however...
I've followed the addition of new updates (not the beta forum but the disclosure of features in a few YT videos) I'd like to give a serious try to, plus it's in beta "3" which I understand should be near a release candidate, meaning it may work as expected.
2ndly, BMD wouldn't talk about real time roadmaps on the other hand anyway, I can't rely on this...

So what do you think, nothing seriously broken in Edit or in the field of the connection between Edit and Fusion ? Else ?

THX in advance ;)

PS: I won't try on an external SSD like I know I could, the goal is right in the Mac app folder, like grown people...

No.

Also what makes you think beta 3 is near RC? Last time there was 8 or so betas.

No... or Yes, as long as you genuinely don't care if you discover something mild that ruins your day and/ or catastrophic that ruins your projects. Your call, of course, it could be plain sailing.. :)

Even when 20 leaves beta and is on general release if it follows the same pattern as previous versions then there will likely be a few remaining issues that will only be identified after more users switch to the new version.

It may well then take a few more patches before 20 becomes fully reliable enough for a production environment.

I've done a couple projects in 20 Beta so far, but they were fairly simple corporate events. No Fusion.

I have the same Mac Mini M1 16GB. I run macOS off an external bootable Samsung T7 SSD. There are instructions on YouTube on how to create a bootable external SSD. It also involves going into macOS settings, search for "startup disk". Each time you want to switch between main disk and external SSD, you have to change the "startup disk" in settings.

I run the DVR beta on the external bootable SSD.

I'm itching to use DVR 20 for actual videos, but the bug(s) I reported still remain in Beta 3, e.g. the word-wrap bug where the green box around the text skews away when using text wrap in a sText node.

Hello,
Between two project, I decided to test DVR 20b2, I exported database and individual project and installed it.
After two weeks of test, I doesn't have any important problems. I doesn't us the brand new facilities (AI sound etc.) I am very happy with the multitext and text wrapping, so I decided to continue with the beta for upadting existing project or begining news. For the moment no big problem. I test some new features on test project and I constantly export working projects.

Haha, thx guys, overall, answers I could imagine I had when I posted... Thx a lot.

A couple of things I think I may add :
@rsf123 : I wrote I wouldn't make an external bootable disk and I wouldn't need YT to make one if decided to, because I've been doing this for ages anyway, for friends or family when I personally didn't need it. This no option in this scenario. Tip : if you don't want to go to MacOS settings to start on another sartup disk, just ^ress "alt" at launch ;)

@Jim : When I know the work on a specific clip would be more than mainstream adjustments or basic compositings (all the more when I know it's going to be a huge comp), I jump on Fusion Studio anyway, so the remark is relevant - I might find broken things there - but I wouldn't let me be trapped here

@jhoepffner : well, interesting you didn't experience huge issues but if you didn't try what you call "new facilities" like AI new features, I can't really judge what I will or won't rely on

Which leads me to be more specific, and so far I really thank you all once again for this answers...
So just a last shot, let's go this way. Compared to what you experienced in previous Resolve version with these very same tools, did you see something got worse with :
- Magic Mask, Depth, Relight
- Voice Isolation and any track based parameters
- Basic Edit functions (ripple delete, trim, Render in place...)

I won't use any text based stuff here and could jump to Apple Motion for the few I would need, so I should have specified this earlier I admit.
Thx again in advance, I'll stop after i promise :D

Edit : I also searched for answers in the beta forum now to do my homeworks and some topics are interesting

Of your list, the ones I use frequently are the Basic Edit Functions. I see no change there. (Except for maybe Easing Keyframes on Edit has been greatly improved.)

Aaaahhh... Short but sweet. That's a great piece of news, given I'll mainly use this part (along with Color obviously)
Thank you.

Looks like Magic Mask was improved too.

Thx Uli, that's what I also noticed in different testimonies, and this is specifically what could be interesting for me now, since this MM2 version appears not to be yet in Fusion Studio v20 beta so far...

I'm puzzled because I like to use this tool for security reasons (like solid mattes) but making larger comps in ReFusion deters me a bit actually.
MM2 would be great along with tons of keys I'm about to jump in, in the 1st project I'm about to start, other improvements would be great for later but could wait (KF TL view, AI voice stuff, ...)

Damn, I have to think about it longer I think...

I was wrong.

At least now you have the full release :)

Haha, yes and I'm glad you were  Actually your message warned me about the official release, so thx anyway ;)

I'm happy because I'm not deep enough in my project to prevent me from upgrading, and I think I will today.

Only disappointment, if I understood well so far, Fusion Studio 20 standalone doesn't feature Magic Mask v2, or at least it's not announced (or I basically missed something). And this defeats a bit my VFX Connect usual WF...
