Project Corruption: Black Spots Appear When Project Opened

PostSun May 11, 2025 4:22 pm

This project has behaved consistently for the past 2 weeks, but today I opened it and found that my footage has these black flickering spots all over it in the timeline. Also, other XAVC footage suddenly plays at only 8FPS where it used to play smoothly before. Something broke, but I don't know what it is.
In addition, when I pause playback the footage appears to drop to 1/4 resolution.

Curiously, the spots don't appear in the Fusion page, but playback is impossible. Footage just won't play anymore.

I found that if I disable Chromatic Adaptation, the black spots go away. But the XAVC playback is still slow and stuttering on other timelines without any of these nodes. Something broken, but I don't know what.

Maybe I should dare upgrade to beta 3?

Just installed Beta 3 and am testing.

Same black spots appearing in my timeline with that Chromatic Adaptation (which worked before today).

Plain XAVC footage on another timeline is now only 7.9 FPS playback and audio stuttering. It's as if DR turned off GPU acceleration today. I've checked the CUDA settings and they are all turned on as before.

I used to be able to play a collage of FIVE 4K XAVC clips, picture in picture collage, at 24 FPS before this.

I've checked Windows power settings and they are still set to high performance. I don't know what changed while the machine was turned off over night. But as it stands, the system is unusable now.

I'm now testing other projects. I have one with URSA footage I downloaded from here. I used to be able to play the 17K URSA 65 footage at 23.976 FPS. Now I get 11.8 and then an error "the GPU failed to perform image processing error 700".

Something absolutely, definitely broke over night.

This does not sound like project corruption. It sounds like the project is just fine but there’s something going wrong in the display pipeline. Perhaps a bad GPU driver.

I'm not sure what may have happened to the GPU driver. I updated it to the latest version just prior to installing DR.

What I did find is that if I put a node in front of the node where Chromatic Adaptation is added, and lowered the highlights down a bit, the black boxes disappeared. It's as if the Chromatic Adaptation feature behaves nasty when white clip levels are reached. I also found that I could recover blown highlights in S-log3 footage by placing a node first in line and lowering the gain and highlight levels. But that Chromatic Adaptation feature has some nasty artifacts when it doesn't like the white levels.

As for the sluggish XAVC footage, I discovered that somehow the Depth map and camera blur features were enabled. I guess the project got saved with those enabled and when I turned off Depth Map, the playback returned to normal.

I think I have these two issues figured out. Of course, I'll check to see if nVidia has a newer driver. Gawd, I wish the motherboard supported an RTX card, but sadly, it's not on the compatibility list, so I'm stuck with 1080Ti, which is adequate for most everything but AI functions.
