Set Up Questions

Background information: Small studio and we have 5 black magic studio camera 4K pros. We are running this via SDI to 2 black magic 8K capture cards in a PC and recording the iso feeds to the computer with VMIX. We have a 10GBE internal network and 2 NAS. 1 Synology, 1 custom built running TruNAS

The cards are starting to give us trouble (we suspect) and are looking at a more robust set up for future plans regardless of whether the cards need to be replaced.

Areas of Interest/Importance:
Capture 4K iso footage from all cameras
Simultaneous capture of proxy footage for all feeds
Ability to automatically move footage to NAS or access footage recorded over network to move to NAS or record to NAS. Not sure if bypassing a HD is a good idea, reliable...

Looking at
Hyperdeck Studio Pro x 5 for iso inputs. Can I got to straight to hyperdeck with no other equipment? I want all the feeds to start recording at the same time....Do I need something in between? I thought I was reading that possibly would need to put these out from the ATEM 4K switcher. We have one, but it is not a rackmount.

Cloud dock/Cloud Store Max performance vs traditional NAS anyone have experience? Speed gains justifiable vs just using proxy footage? We are an all adobe house and using frame.io, thinking about the move to DaVinci for this kind of workflow and remote editors...Seems to be same basic approach. Weighing this against something like Cree8.io

To help, but before, a few questions (to confirm) .

- To record HD or 4K at 30 fps or 60 fps (6G or 12G) ???

- For the workflow, Which codec do you need: ProRes HQ or just a proxy or DNxHR ??

- Do you need redundancy (backup) for the recording ????

- if you recorded directly to HyperDecks and after transfer (time to copy) the clips to a NAS, would that work for you???

- Or would you need instantaneus access to the clips at NAS ???

We are recording at 4K, 30 fps

For codec, it probably doesn't matter too much. A good balance between file size and quality is helpful, though file size is probably the more important of the two. We are almost all mac, so ProRes is familiar to us. However, we are not married to this. The proxy I was mentioning mostly to save time because it will improve speed on the post production side.

We have not been operating with redundancy thus far. So if the system comes with it, we may take advantage of it, otherwise, we can always record locally to the cameras at the same time I think if we need that.

If we record directly to hyperdecks and transfer later that does work, however this a bit part of the reason for creating proxies simultaneously. We could let footage transfer and take it's time, whiled the proxies are ready quicker for editing. If the situation was such that the footage was available on the NAS immediately, we would want to proxy it first before editing.

Well, couple options to analyze and evaluate.

Only general information, always evaluate every detail to choose the best solution for each case/project.


Option-1
One HyperDeck per camera. HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro is the only model with 10G network port, allowing you to transfer files from the HyperDeck to the NAS. (others models are 1G Lan port)
Or connecting the drives (SSD, SD card cards) to another computer and transferring the files to the NAS.

option-2 interesting :

This unit can record up to 4 UltraHD channels. ...+1 (User Manual - page 69, 70, 71, 72)


You can install an M.2 drive inside the unit (up to 8TB). ...+1 (User Manual - page 64)

But, something very interesting is the option to share the M.2 drive (volume) via SMB on the network, which means you can read files on the network directly from this HyperDeck (10G network port), and/or access them to transfer them to the NAS. (User Manual page 66, 67)

Lets say this is just a first approach.

Do you evaluate if need it a VideoHUB ??

Thanks for all the input. I am evaluating my options given what you said.

I see that I can do some external recording on both units. Do you know if the externals have to be the same format as what is recorded internally? Or can it be a different format? Also is it recording iso to the external or just a single feed?

Important:

You can only record to one storage device at the time

only CFast card
or
only USB drive
or
only M.2 drive

And only one codec, selected ( Record menu)

NOTE: In fact, ONLY the M.2 drive can be configured as Network Storage. (page 62)
