10 bit 4:2:2 files not working?

PostMon May 19, 2025 9:10 pm

Hi there,

I shoot on a Lumix G9 at 24p 10 bit 4:2:2 Vlog MOV
My computer is an MSI 144Hz FHD Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i7-13620H, RTX 4070, 16GB DDR5, 1TB
I use Davinci free.

My computer cannot open my files and when I import them into Davinci, it shows "media offline" as well as only showing an audio channel. Thinking making proxies could be solution, I tried the proxy generator, but that wont even recognize ANY files to convert when I link it to my media folder. The following picture shows what GPUs can process these files and states that I cannot handle 10 bit 4:2:2. Would upgrading to Studio fix my problem, or is it my hardware that needs a bump?

I can view and use my footage when I convert to MP4 through handbrake. Does converting from MOV to MP4 affect my the capabilities in post? I have heard that Shutter Encoder is better?

The G9 was released in 2017 and Vlog shortly after. How were people viewing and editing footage years ago with less access to affordable tech? How were they doing this without breaking the bank, and can I avoid buying yet another computer?

Thank you for the help in advance,

Jack Grant

Correct. This is expected behavior, resolve free on windows doesn't support 10 bit h.264/5

I find it unacceptable that Resolve doesn't have error messages about supported codecs, you will be one of many users with the same confusion this week. I have created a feature request to as BM to add error messages and would request your support of it here

Your work around options are;
Use a Mac
Buy a $300 resolve key
Transcode all the footage to Dnxhr HQX with Shutter Encoder (free)

I thought recent versions of free did?

If all the OP did was change the container isn't the issue the container?

I don't see a document for the v20 beta. But I would have expected the release notes to make pretty big news if they added 10 bit support to free.

Hardware H.265 encoding was added to free not to long ago and Prores software encoding too. Maybe this is what you are thinking of?

Container is not the issue. Quicktime (*.mov) is fine in free. It is the codec that is the issue.

I forget what container Shutter Encoder will default to for Dnxhr (mp4 or mov), but whatever it is, it works.

Your CPU with QS will decode 10bit 4:2:2 but the RTX4070 will not, so decode of your files is left to your CPU. Earlier free version did not decode but not sure about current free version. Did you try setting your QS GPU as the decode GPU in Preferences and not the RTX4070. I cannot say about the free version but I have been using Resolve Studio for a number years now with my GH5, GH5S, GH6 all using Vlog starting with my Threadripper and a 1080Ti. The PC will handle one track OK but not multicam which I then use my Studio Max with hardware decode. I would certainly buy the Studio version you have a lot more money invested in your camera, lens and PC than the $300. Even then you will need QS enabled as GPU to decode as the 4070 will not decode 10bit 4:2:2. The 4070 will decode 8bit 4:2:0 Vlog try that and see if you can really see the difference for your scenes. You will of course see banding if you push the grade. At least then you can practice grading Vlog etc.

It defaults to MOV, which makes a lot of sense given the better support of TC.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
