Option to set default value for Pivot in project settings

PostWed Apr 30, 2025 9:34 am

With more and more people understanding the importance of middle grey it get's more and more common to set the contrast Pivot in the primary palette to a value that makes sense in the selected timeline color space.

For example in DaVinci Intermediate it is beneficial to set the pivot to 0.336 (the normalized value for 18% mid grey in DaVinci Intermediate), so the exposure does not move when adjusting contrast.

However we have to do that on every node manually. My request:
Let us define the default value in the project settings.

(We can already change the s-curve type, the luminance mix value and many more. So this wouldn't be a new or impossible thing. Just a small and very helpful addition that safes us some time.)

Yes, you can save a default node tree with whatever value you want, but why not default to something the user wants, like luma mix.

a power grade is only a workaround. for one the node will immediately be considered "graded", so clip filtering by graded / ungraded becomes useless. also resetting the node would result in resetting this pivot as well. you would also need identical node trees for different working color spaces. the list goes on.

a default value on a project basis would be the best choice

The problem with this is, the moment you reset the node, tie goes back to the default and not was in the powergrade. I have the same issue with HDR Wheels. I have a custom setup for my Shadows, Light, etc, and if I reset it, the goes back to the default.

unrelated to this post, but for the HDR wheels you can actually save a default configuration in the tool menu. it will remember positions, fall-offs and number of zones

I have it set up. I think something was messing me up with it.
