Add transition at edit point?

PostSun May 25, 2025 7:42 pm

How do we add a transition at the edit point AND align it centered?

This is set as my standard transition AND is saved as a favorite. When I double click in the Effects panel I get the expected behavior:

But despite it being the standard transition, Ctrl+T adds 2 transitions and aligns them within the selected clip:

From page 593 of the manual:

"You can also add a transition that’s aligned with the beginning, middle, or end of the edit point using
the keyboard. To do so, select an edit point, press the U key repeatedly to cycle among selecting the
start, center, or end of the edit (it doesn't actually do anything), then press Command-T to add the standard transition. The standard transition will be added with its alignment based on the edit selection you made; selecting the start of the edit places a transition that ends on the edit; selecting the end of the edit places a transition that starts on the edit, and choosing the center of the edit places a transition that is similarly centered."

It is definitely not following that behavior.

Also, there seems to be a bug with the Effects Favorites. Starring user favorites only - does not add anything to the favorites. Adding a pre-built transition makes all favorited transitions appear but I'm trying to only have User transitions in my favorites. (Also, individual transitions should be able to be placed directly under Favorites so we don't have to drill down to Toolbox then Video Transitions. I get that it's good organization if you have tons of favorites but I have like 4 so I don't want that organization.)

The Ctrl+T shortcut behaves differently than double-clicking the transition in the Effects panel.

In the second image, the clip is selected, but you need to select the edit point between the two clips (by clicking it with the mouse) before using the Ctrl+T shortcut

Thanks for that info. This is bad behavior because it requires using a mouse. Arrowing up or down to an edit point ant then Ctrl+T should insert the default transition.

Try this:

1. Ctrl+A (Deselect)
2. Up/Down Arrow (to Edit Point)
3. T (Trim Mode)
4. V (Select Edit Point)
5. Ctrl+T (Add Transition)

It does. But you have an entire clip selected, not an edit point. Once you select an edit point (v key), you can "arrow" around in select or trim mode applying centered transitions as you like.

(Note: you may have to hit the "U" key to choose centering of the transition - depending upon how you left this.)

Jim: Thanks! That works perfectly. Very roundabout but it works. Going to set this up on Stream Deck so it can be as convoluted as needed :) I didn't know about V so thanks both of you.

EDIT: Weirdly, this worked perfectly about 10 times. Then it started only selecting the edit point of one clip or the other for about 10 times. Now it's back to selecting the edit point between the clips. Currently V is selecting the edit point for both clips and then Ctrl+T is adding the transition correctly. Not needing to Ctrl+A nor trim. I don't know.

U will switch between selections - Left, Centered, Right.
