DaVinci keeps crashing, pretty much unusable

Hey, I've got a big problem.
I'm currently editing a video which is cut fairly fast-pace and today, out of nowhere, it started crashing once I opened my project immediately. It did crash a few times before, but I could always just restart and continue working, however it just crashes over and over again when I open the project, no matter what I do.
I tried many things already. My first idea was to find out what triggered the crash, and I thought it was the video footage I used, but that didn't seem to be the case, because I swapped out every single MP4 with a MOV file (since DaVinci doesn't always do well with MP4) and it still didn't help. I tried creating more timelines, which also didn't help. I even tried to uninstall and reinstall DaVinci Resolve, but you can probably guess whether it helped or not.
It seems to be crashing everytime I open the Edit page, everytime I zoom in very close and sometimes when I just try to edit. I found this out because I was able to sometimes "out-go" the crash. I could do this via creating a back-up and loading it, that way I ended up in the Cut page which (for some reason) doesn't crash DaVinci Resolve immediately. I tried changing the data from there, switching up a few things, but in the end, my little project, which has been planned for years, can't be continued anymore.
I really hope that there is some way to fix this, whatever the problem is...

When you restart from a crash, use the Resolve Help menu: "Create Diagnostics Log on Desktop" to generate a Resolve log file.

Put that file on a file sharing site and provide a link to it here.

I am having the same issue. I've been using the latest Resolve 19 beta version since it came out and haven't had any issues. As I tried to open the application to work on a project this morning the program froze and I would just get a spinning rainbow wheel. The only thing I can do is force quit the application. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times but it still does the same thing.

I have a MacBook Pro 2021 M1 Max with 32 GB of memory.

The Davinci Resolve logs file is attached for review.

@Josh: Open Finder and navigate to this location:

/Users/mphoto/Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve

/Users/mphoto/Library is a hidden folder, so you'll need to press the <COMMAND> and <SHIFT> and <.> (period) keys simultaneously to enable Finder to show hidden files/folders.

In that folder, Duplicate the .config.data (this is a hidden file, so make sure Finder is still in show hidden files/folders mode) and config.dat files. This is just so we have an original copy we can get back to, if needed.

Then edit the .config.data and config.dat files using TextEdit, and add this line to the bottom of both files:

System.Scripting.Mode = 0

After adding that to the bottom of both files, save the change and exit TextEdit.

Now see if Resolve will start. If it still doesn't start, send another Resolve log.

I made the changes to those files but Resolve still freezes when I open the application. Also, the CaptureLogs app didn't seem to update so I don't know if the attached file is an updated Logs file or not

OK. The issue seems Fusion related. So 2 more things to try:

First thing - In Finder go to this folder:

/Users/mphoto/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve

And rename the Fusion folder to Fusion.orig

This will cause a new default Fusion folder to be created at startup. If there was something bad in the Fusion area, this would fix it.

If the above does not help, then go to this folder in Finder:

/Users/mphoto/Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design

Then rename the DaVinci Resolve folder to DaVinci Resolve.orig

This will cause a default Resolve preferences folder to be created at startup. If there was something bad in the preferences area, this would fix that.

If neither of these things helps, send a new Resolve log.

The second option worked. After changing to DaVinci.orig it opened up with no problem. I quickly checked one project and everything seemed fine. I'll dig into some other projects and see if there's anything else I see. Thanks for your help!

It would be helpful if you could provide details of what type of hardware and OS you are using, and the Resolve version, and whether it's the free or Studio version.

The same problem. Back on 11/25/24 free version 19.1.0 worked stably, the computer configuration did not change, but all latest Windows 10 Pro updates were installed. A couple of days ago I updated Resolve to version 19.1.2 and the program began to silently close after opening any existing project, or rather after trying to move the cursor along the timeline or after trying to play any fragment of the video. Removed 19.1.2, updated the NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 driver (performed a clean installation), installed 19.1.0 - nothing has changed, Resolve crashes. Use the Custom Installation mode, and then the Clean Install mode.

I just re-read your post, and you appear to have done a clean NVIDIA driver install.

That being the case, I'd suggest you use the DDU driver uninstaller app, and completely remove the NVIDIA driver, and then run the 566.36 driver installer again.

This is a link to another forum post where I describe where to get DDU and how to use it. That post was for removing an Intel GPU driver. Same process, but select NVIDIA instead of Intel:

If Resolve is still crashing, it may be because your GT1030 GPU only has 2GB of VRAM, and the Resolve 19 minimum recommended GPU VRAM level for Windows is 4GB. A better GPU would likely help.

You say that you are using the same simple projects as previously with 19.1, so probably not a GPU VRAM issue, but something to consider. Hopefully using DDU and a driver reinstall fixes the issue.

Completely uninstalled NVIDIA video and audio drivers, installed the latest driver 566.36-desktop-win10-win11-64bit-international-dch-whql.exe, created a new project, imported a one-minute video from a smartphone, added it to the timeline. When trying to play it, DaVinci still hangs at first (it says "not responding" in the window title bar) and then silently closes. What else can be done? As I wrote earlier, DaVinci previously worked fine for many years on NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 despite the insufficient 2 GB of video memory.

Version 9.1.3 is out. The list of fixed bugs includes the item "Addressed crash in Windows systems with old AMD CPUs". On my computer with AMD FX-6300 DaVinci stopped closing, both old and new projects worked again.

I'm having the same problem since the release of Resolve 19.

It crashes randomly when simply moving sliders pretty much on anything (color wheels, transform, etc). I used to think Gyroflow or Film Look Creator are to blame, but now it just crashed when I was simply adjusting Position X on a Transform effect on Adjustment Layer.

I'm running on a 16 inch 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max 32gb Ram, Sequoia 15.2, Resolve 19.1.3

The issue is definitely Gyroflow related. If you disable that in Resolve Preferences - System - Video Plugins, does that stop the crashing?

Hi, i'm new in here and i'll really appreciate if Dwaine could help me. When i open resolve and i load a project i can use import new files but i can't edit them or even review them in the playback. As soon as i try doing anything the program would crash. I don't know what could be causing it but i've tried many things like fixing the graphic drivers or checking the VRAM. I've use resolve before without this kind of isues for years and this started happening today. I hadn't updated resolve, windows or the graphic drivers or installed anything lately.

It would help to have a Windows System Information .NFO file.

Being that you are using an AMD GPU, do you have the RivaTuner app installed? That will cause Resolve to crash when using AMD GPUs.

Hello, I also have the problem that DaVinci Resolve (Version 19.1.3. Build 7) crashes. It seems to crash randomly, for example when impoting .png-files or when dragging a "Fusion Composition" to the timeline.

I wanted to chime in on this because I'm having the same problems on every computer I have. My M1 Max, M2 Studio and my PC build. Resolve 19 has been a complete nightmare since I updated. Every version has been worse than the last. I've never experienced so many crashes on any piece of software in my life.

This is the most unstable and unreliable program I've touched. I've created new projects, reinstalled everything imaginable, export and imported into new databases, etc. Absolutely nothing works. The more you open it the worse it gets.

I can create a new project and within hours or minutes the program becomes so unstable that it crashes as it's opening or will stay open for seconds before crashing. All versions of 19 do this. I've exhausted forums, chatgpt, combed through logs, I've done every thing suggested and it just gets worse.

What I don't understand is how professionals are able to use 19. I'm hours away from being fired from a job because I can't deliver the project. I've had a support ticket open for 10 days and still nothing. Where is the customer support? What are you supposed to do when you have clients and deadlines? It's been 10 days of me begging the client to give me another day and not a word from Blackmagic.

How is it possible that you can create a program that doesn't work on any system? doesn't matter which version of Mac or PC, operating system, etc, this program just doesn't preform.

This is the stuff that gives you heart attacks. I have loved learning color correction and really enjoy doing it, but when you experience a total lack of performance from the software you rely on, when is enough, enough?

@Hennning: You have the infamous Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU in your system, and the Intel graphics on that CPU don't seem to work well at all, unless you have a very specific Intel iGPU driver installed. The thread below has details on how to accomplish that. Please give that a try and hopefully that makes Resolve happier.

R20b4Studio / i7-13700K / Windows 11 Pro (latest version) / RTX4070 (latest update) / 32GB RAM / Plenty of SSD Space

Issue: After a BIOS update and R20B4 update, suddenly, every 4K project crashes when trying to play video on the timeline or scrubbing. The computer runs stable for any other program except for Resolve.

UPDATE: So far, I'm going on two days that I can't use Resolve. Unfortunately, this has negatively impacted my work. I have tried to reinstall the current as well as the previous version. Both do exactly the same thing. So, I don't think it's the new beta. I scanned Windows for errors in the system and couldn't find any. One option that could potentially fix this would be to reformat the system drive, but I definitely cannot do that right now.

As a sanity check to ensure the Dehancer plugins aren't causing an issue, exit Resolve and do the following:

In File Explorer, go to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX

In the OFX folder is a folder called Plugins

Rename the Plugins folder to Plugins.orig

Start Resolve and load the project. Does it still crash? Do any of the 5 timelines crash, or is the crashing related to a specific timeline and/or area of a timeline?

Dwaine, thank you! I hadn’t thought to bypass Dehancer or any of the other OFX plugins, especially since I have a second system with the exact same setup—just fewer projects—and that one runs without issue. Interestingly, it’s actually the older machine.

I have a meeting at the moment, but I’ll begin isolating which OFX plugin is causing the crash as soon as I’m free. For reference, this issue occurred on every 4K timeline across all projects—simply scrubbing would cause Resolve to crash.

Fortunately, I can now resume work on that system, as the current project doesn’t require any OFX plugins.

After returning home to test each OFX plugin, I found that Resolve crashes regardless of whether the plugins are installed. I’m not sure why renaming the plugin folder worked earlier—now even with the folder renamed, Resolve still crashes.

Every timeline crashes just from scrubbing video. I even installed today’s latest version, but the issue persists.

It crashes with all footage from my Sony A7Sii and A7iv—both HLG3 and SLOG3—even with no effects or edits, just by dragging clips to the timeline. Oddly, it runs fine with GoPro 4K and older HD video, even with plugins enabled.

One strange thing: when I launch Resolve and load a project, the screen freezes, briefly flashes white, then returns to the UI. After that, the program becomes unstable—I can open menus or save and exit, but that’s about it.

There are no crash logs. We rotate the crash logs, so even if it hasn't crashed since the last logs you sent, those crash logs should still be there.

Did you do some sort of clean Resolve install that would have wiped all the original logs?

But even so, if it's been crashing, there should be those current crash logs.

I'm confused...

I used REVO to uninstall version 19b4 of DaVinci Resolve and reverted back to 19b3, but the crashes persisted; I would expect that numerous crash logs were generated as a result.

I'm finding that Resolve becomes unstable and frequently crashes when working with 4K HLG3 and S-Log3 footage from my Sony cameras - all of these files are encoded in H.265. The timeline tends to freeze when I drop in clips longer than 2 minutes and 16 seconds. In one case, I used four random clips without issue, but adding a fifth short clip (around 5–10 seconds) caused Resolve to crash completely.

Interestingly, I have no issues importing GoPro footage, which is also encoded in H.265. In fact, most other footage formats seem to work fine, even with my OFX plugins restored.

I wish I could reformat the system drive and put this behind me, but unfortunately, I can't right now because I have other projects in different programs that run fine. This behavior is odd and inconsistent.

UPDATE: For whatever reason, it's definitely my 10-bit 422 Sony 4K HEVC files. I understand that file type takes quite a bit more CPU than 8bit files, so it made me think the issue may be related to the graphic card. A couple of places I tinkered around with are UNCHECKing "Intel Quick Sync" in DaVinci Resolve>Preferences>System Tab>Decode Options

I Saved the setting, restarted, and everything seems to work. I restarted Resolve again, and loaded the same Test Project, and again it's working. Even with the OFX plugins restored. With my luck, it will start crashing again after I post this. (facepalm)

However, I get a white bar on clips with Dehancer. I have to DESELECT Cuda and choose OpenCL under DaVinci Resolve>Preferences>System Tab>Memory and GPU>GPU Configuration

That is disappointing. Ok...so with the above settings, I seem (fingers crossed) to have my system back. I was finally able to render a project. I am still not confident about this installation. I think I'll still reformat the system drive next month.

You definitely should NOT select OpenCL GPU processing for NVIDIA GPUs. That will cause all sorts of issues. Sounds like an issue with the Dehancer OFX.

Ok, this is great info. I've turned Cuda back on and Dehancer acted up and convulsed as expected. I found that both the OpenCL and Cuda versions of the Dehancer plugins existed in the plugins folder; not sure how that happened but it did. I deleted both, downloaded the Dehancer installer, installed the Cuda version. Dehancer now has a pulse. What I learned from this, at least for me, is not to install both OpenCL and Cuda versions of Dehancer on the same system. I feel like it shouldn't matter but it seems for my system, it does.

I'm still not understanding how the Intel Quick Sync was the issue for the crashing all along. I feel like I'm walking on eggshells working on this system now. I hate that feeling. Dwaine...thank you for all your help. For now...the vitals are stable and my system is breathing on its own. Other than the user guide, what other reference can I study to have a better grasp of how Resolve works under the hood?
