Davinci Resolve crashes every time I click Fusion tab (18.5)

PostTue Aug 01, 2023 6:23 pm

I've seen other forum posts about this, and no one seems to have the right answer..

However, my problem isn't specific to one project, as I've seen other posts mostly about, so maybe it's a different issue altogether.

Resolve (18.5) crashes for me if I click the Fusion tab in ANY project across Resolve. It doesn't shut down by itself, but rather it freezes with the rainbow wheel, and then after a while of sitting there, I have to force quit. Furthermore, then if I try to open ANY project after restarting the app, it again freezes. The one workaround I've found is that I can start a new project and it will load, and then I can navigate to the Home tab and open any other project. But if I click the Fusion tab again in any project, the whole problem starts again.

This started when I was just editing something in Fusion about a week ago, and it just froze.

I've spoken with a customer support, and they escalated it to a specialist who I sent logs and files etc to. However, I still haven't received an answer, and now I have a project I need done asap, and I can't work around it anymore because I need Fusion.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling 18.5, didn't work. Tried uninstalling and downloading 18.1.4, that also didn't work - same freezing issue with the Fusion tab.

Can anyone help me figure out what is going on?

Brainstorming...

* The uninstall/reinstall failure to fix this makes me wonder if you have a problem add-in/script/extension in place. In Windows that might be in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Fusion and its subfolders.

I'm not sure those folders get deleted when you uninstall. If you don't see/remember the problem add-in when you browse, you could uninstall DR, delete the whole folder tree (perhaps starting up at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design), reinstall and see if it works.

* You could try downloading the standalone Fusion application and see if you can the Fusion-critical work there, as a stopgap until tech support gets back to you.

Yep, as Wesley suggests, try using Fusion Studio (instead of Resolve)... does that work without crashing?

I'm on Mac so trying to find what the equivalent folder would be, but if I'm understanding correctly, you're saying to uninstall Resolve and then additionally manually delete this folder, and then when I reinstall, it should replace this folder if it sees it's not there?

I will also look into Fusion studio for now, thanks!

Copying content from another thread...

On a Mac, the user files are in two places (also true on a PC, where I previously listed just the user-specific folder tree). Dwaine Maggart previously noted that Mac files in the user specific folder are persistent https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=127562:

Files that are persistent are in your user-specific folder:
If you want it to be more persistent, put it into your user specific folder, which is here:

/Users/xxxx/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Support/Fusion/Templates/Edit/Titles

Go look there.

FYI, system templates are under:
/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Fusion/Templates

...it will likely be removed if you uninstall Resolve 17.

Can't offer a solution but a suggestion for diagnosis that I have found useful for Fusion crashes. There is a console window that can be opened and left open that can show a running commentary on Fusion activities. I have found this very useful when renders have failed as the messages sent to the console can give clues about the error, sometimes even the exact time in the clip where it occurs. It's likely that the logs you sent have the equivalent information, but when you are grasping at straws, you never know where the clue you need will come from.

*SOLVED*

A Resolve technician just figured it out and it turned out to be very simple. I followed the steps below and it worked. Leaving here for anyone else who has this problem in the future:

Make a new project. Open it.
Right away, go to Workspace ▸ Reset UI Layout.
Restart the app.

Unfortunately, no one is responding to my thread.
Maybe you have another idea.

I had exactly the same problem as you with the Fusion tool. Thank you very much for this help. I was already losing my hope.

This algorithm worked for me!
1. Create a new project. 2. Reset UI Layout.
Amazing! The problem was very tough and caused a lot of anxiety. And how easily (and yet inexplicably! what does UI layout have to do with it) it was solved.

The procedure described by hamond and hindchin worked for me in that it allowed me to rescue a project that was stuck on Fusion tab, thus crashing a launch. I can now open the projet again and work into it.

BUT, that didn't fixed the whole "DaVinci crash as soon as I switch to Fusion tab" bug.

Did that worked for you guys in that regard?

I've had the same problem for 15 days, so I spoke to a professional editor friend of mine who immediately sent me your page! I was afraid I'd have to embark on a much more complex process, such as resetting my entire computer... But it's done in 3 clicks!
Congratulations and a big thank you!

Davinci Resolve crashes every time I click Fusion tab (18.5)

PostFri Dec 20, 2024 12:46 am

A few years ago I made a feature request to save people from just this sort of thing:

viewtopic.php?p=888059#p888059

PS: your post’s title is a bit misleading. A crash is when the program goes away by itself. A hang is when it remains unresponsive - often with a beachball.

You might get more people commenting if you adjusted the title.

So they never fixed the bug… just found a workaround for you. Sigh.
