Cannot select CUDA in GPU configuration

PostSun May 25, 2025 3:28 pm

Installed DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.4 beta (first install) today.

The program would not start as it stated my graphics card driver did not support CUDA 12.3. The program will only open if I press GPU Configuration and Auto unchecked and OpenCL is selected. THe drop down box does not even show CUDA.

This is the same problem as described in several other threads such as
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=210187&p=1091708&hilit=rtx+a2000+driver#p1091708
But the solution there did not work.

I find this strange as it is a relatively new system and certainly the graphics card driver supports CUDA

It is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super with nvidia driver 566.36
Due to many experiencing issues with NVIDIA recent driver issues, I DDU'ed the driver and installed 566 clean using windows safe mode and there have been no problems or GPU issues.
I have selected high performance in DVR windows graphics settings.

Well, the first thing I would do is update the driver and see what that gets me.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

it is a relatively new system and certainly the graphics card driver supports CUDA

But not the necessary version of CUDA. Specifically, CUDA 12.3

You need to update your video driver to NVIDIA Studio driver 570.65 or newer.

Thanks Jim and Stephen. Much appreciated.

The driver I am using is from December 2024. I believe that driver should be the necessary version of CUDA. Unless anyone using drivers before that date had the same experience or version 20 is different to previous.

I appreciate most other forum users will not be familiar with the NVIDIA saga. Just google NVIDIA and black screen. I cannot seem to post the URL but there are NVIDIA sites and forums. quoting the problems with the latest drivers and specfically the black screens when using displayport but also many other crashes and problems. Many NVIDIA users are avoiding the recent drivers.

I sorted my own NVIDIA driver issues by DDUing to the most recent driver widely recommended on all the specialist NVIDIA forums as stable. WOrks a treat and all other programs stable.

I would prefer not to update the NVIDIA drivers until there is real progress and success in addressing their recent driver issues. There was a faint hope a few days ago this might be the case but once again numerous reports of failure. These are not just from random dissatisfied users - mainstream websites have picked this up.

So are you saying that 20 requires a driver which 19 did not? And are we certain that a driver which has worked with previous versions would not work with 20?

Resolve 19 uses CUDA 12 and required the driver to be 550.58 or newer.
Resolve 20 uses CUDA 12.8 and requires driver 570.65 or newer.

Perfect thanks Charles. Problem sorted.

From Nvidia:
2.5 What’s New in Release 566
> Support for CUDA 12.7.
> Adds the latest performance improvements, bug fixes, and driver enhancements.

Now I just need to find a stable driver with 12.8. Really grateful.

Interestingly Blackmagic RAW Speed Test gives results for CUDA at 3:1 bitrate of between 106 and 1698fps 8K to HD) even on the current driver. Not sure of the significance of that.

What that means is that the BRAW Speed Test does not require CUDA 12.8 support, but Resolve 20 does.

And just to note, as listed in the Read More in the Resolve 20 download area:

Minimum system requirements for Windows
Windows 10 Creators Update.
16 GB of system memory or 32 GB when using Fusion.
For monitoring, Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later.
Integrated GPU or discrete GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM.
GPU which supports OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8.
AMD/Intel official drivers from your GPU manufacturer.
NVIDIA Studio driver 570.65 or newer.

Can I install the requested driver with any NVIDIA graphics card?

I have this one. (My apologies for the Swedish language, but I'm sure you'll understand)

Not for ANY NVIDIA card, but definitely for your RTX3060.

576.52 Studio would be the current driver for Windows:
