Auto back-up while performing task locks-up system

PostSun Feb 05, 2023 9:36 pm

This has happened twice in two days, while I am performing a task like solving a camera tracker in Fusion or as simple as playing thru with Color Stabilizer on, the system will auto Performing Backup, and seemingly because of this, the Backup will freeze, and not complete the backup. I cannot seem to cancel the backup window. None of the other controls seem to do anything; presumably, Davinci is waiting for the backup to complete. From my experience, this has only been an issue with version 18.

When Auto-Backup was first provided as a feature (I'm guessing back in Resolve 16), I encountered this a couple of times and it was enough to sour me on using it. Instead of using Auto-Backup, I just make manual backups at least once a day -- sometimes twice a day if I have clients in the room. I keep the backup sessions in a "Color" folder on the source drive, and I manually enter the current date as part of the file name.

What's supposed to happen is it's supposed to buffer any commands you do while the system is momentary busy doing the save... so basically, Resolve freezes for a second or two while backing up, then it implements whatever keys you're hitting when it comes out of the freeze. Quite a few programs do similar things. It shouldn't lock it up permanently -- it should come out of it in a few seconds so you can keep working.

I have no suggestion beyond creating a Diagnostics Log and sending that to BMD support so they can examine the conditions that led up to the crash.

I also found the Project Backups more intrusive than helpful. I leave them off.

In addition to what's already mentioned, automatic backups also break scripts that are running inside DaVinci Resolve using their API.

In my opinion they're doing it the right way when Resolve is rendering on the Deliver page, where it just postpones the backup until the render has completed. It seems they could do the same for all those other operations as well.

Maybe Backups should wait for a user-specified period of complete inactivity, rather than a user specified interval?

Add to that an automatic Backup with user-specified addendum (date, time, version, etc) every time you close the Project, and maybe we have something workable.

It sure would be nice if backups waited at least for a few seconds of user idle time before starting. As it is they often interrupt the user as while they're fully engaged in editing.

+1 for having backups run after a period of idle time. getting coffee, bio break, phone call, etc. would be perfect, rather than interrupting a process leading to DVR crashing.

Confirmation: Auto back-up while performing task locks-up sy

PostMon Nov 13, 2023 10:59 am

Unfortunately I must confirm that this is still happening more often than acceptable. I am unsing DRS 18.6.2 and it happened twice since last friday.
DRS is completely frozen no matter how long you are waiting for the backup to complete. The only way out is to kill the DRS task - thus loosing all unsaved work :/

I was just about to make a new thread regarding this when I found this one. It is such a small thing but it completely throws me off when suddenly nothing works for a couple of seconds...

Try Timeline Backups, Dan. They were created in answer to this issue and are far less intrusive.

Looking into the settings it seems like I have both on (project and timeline backups). I wasn't even aware.

Will need to look into how timeline backups work. Thanks!

I don't mind the occasional delay, I just wish backups wouldn't do the opposite and lock up resolve causing me to have to revert to an earlier backup.
