Is 8GB of VRAM enough?

PostMon Jun 02, 2025 7:03 am

I'm building a PC on a budget and I want to know if 8 gigabytes of VRAM is enough. I only make videos in 1080P and up to 3 minutes long. Is this enough?

The more the better. 8GB is the absolute minimum. Of course it depends on how you use it. The more crazy effects and AI you use the more VRAM you will need. And don't forget the rest of the system since some functionalities in Resolve are CPU (and RAM) heavy.

Are you thinking you might want to make 2160p videos in the future? Are you planning to make use of extensive OFX effects (Resolve Effects) for color grading of VFX?

As others have stated, for 1080p footage and moderate use of the effects, 8 GB VRAM should be enough. I can tell you from personal experience that 8GB of VRAM was not enough when I started working with and delivering UHD (2160p) footage with heavier use of effects (on the color page, not in Fusion).

Most likely you will be just fine. I have NVidia 2080 Super with 8GB of VRAM, I edit 4K videos with some light use of effects (mainly noise reduction), and I have not had any show stoppers so far (to knock on the wood), with caveat that I am still on 18.5 (I don't know have requirements increased since then).

My 4k Exports on my 16gb card use 11gb of VRAM. But I do use a few DCTLs and OFX.

Certainly lots of people are using 8gb cards.

The 3060 12gb card at $300 (USD) is the typical budget recommendation for resolve. The 5060TI 16gb at $500 is also worth considering. AMD 7600 XT is 16gb card at $350

50 Series will force you to run V20 resolve though.
