Insert Edit Export

PostTue May 13, 2025 10:07 am

Hello!

First, congratulations on the new DaVinci Resolve 20. I'm looking forward to it.

Still, there is one feature this is a must to me that I would very much like in Resolve: insert edit export.
What do I mean by this? More often than not, I make a first version of the edit and I send to clients for review. They always ask for modifications. In later stages, those changes are small and confined to very short segments of the edit.

The ideia would be to export only this segment and insert it in the original exported file, This way, not only I would save a lot of time, especially in long sequences in the export itself and the render. This is also a plus for people who have slower systems.

Insert edit export has been implemented a few years ago by Avid and does exactly this. After you make the first export, you can just export the segment you wish, by selecting an in and out point and tell the software to replace it in the export file.

This feature is demoed here:

I leave this to your consideration, hoping to see it in a future Resolve release.

Thank you!

Good idea, but would likely cause bloat, plus contain redundant content - perhaps with legal implications.

Insert editing is so quick, worked well in the days of tape & is equally useful in files. e.g I've made a graphics fix in a later segment whilst a show is airing.

https://cinextools.com/ has a free trial, plus it's only $44/day if you only need it once in a while. Not used it with DR (only AMC & PP) but I think it has a plugin for DR too so should work direct from timeline.

Absolutely +100

Shutter Encoder, which is free, has this feature, but it would be a game changer if you could do this directly in Resolve.

That said, you could also use Supplemental IMFs for this type of change management in Resolve, which is super-duper cool, but does require IMF aware playback tools (e.g. it wont work if you need to export an MP4 using an Adobe Media Encoder based workflow)
