Release of Davinci Resolve 20 Studio - Crash on Colorpage

PostWed May 28, 2025 8:09 pm

Surprise when the release was made. Unfortunately, the result wasn't great, because even the final release is still buggy.

When coloring, DaVinci Resolve Final crashes on a PC with an nVidia 5080 and the latest driver and OS. Only one thing - it crashes. No error message, the "resolve.exe" process freezes.

Restart Resolve, and it works. Back to the Editor page, do a bit more editing, go back to the Color page, adjust the "Gain" a bit, and... crash.

Give the FAQ a good read. It goes over what information to post for crashes.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The 6-year-old article didn't help either, so thanks for nothing - I'll stick with this:
The reasons are obvious; it seems to be directly related to the nVidia 5080, because older graphics cards work, as other users report.

How can a manufacturer advertise that the new graphics cards are supported, and then the user experiences one crash after another? The DR logs don't reveal anything either. Only the operating system event log reveals:

Unable to communicate with the display driver. The application must close.

Rude, lol
The 6-year old article describes how to capture Resolve logs, system information, etc., place them on a file share such as drop-box and then post the link to them here so that BMD support staff can take a look at what caused Resolve to crash. Doing this will go a long way to helping you and others experiencing instabilities in Resolve. Rather than repeating all of this, forum users often just link to the FAQ page where this information and many more trouble-shooting tips can be found.

I second the crashes on the color page with new nVidia hardware. I have not had problems with it when I was using a 3060, but I just put in a 5070 Ti and I have the same problem. The crashes are somewhat random. Sometimes it's just switching to the color page that Resolve locks up, and sometimes I can spend 5 minutes going stuff, but it is guaranteed to crash within 15 minutes.
