Re: Blackmagic Ursa Cine 12K LF

I started with Black Magic, ended up becoming a Red user for close to ten years, and now I'm going back to BMD... I've been very interested in the 12K since its launch, but wasn't able to pull it off until this summer, so it was fortuitous that the LF body only landed along with the Pyxis 12K right around the same time :)

On top of that, Dulens lenses were still on sale at a pretty nice discount, and I ended up catching the newer 21 and 110mm mini primes when they happened to come back in stock but weren't yet on the web site.

The memory cards are supposed to arrive tomorrow, the body next week, but the Shape B-mount batteries are still in backorder limbo.

Jut got a RED Komodo. Always wanted to be a RED dongle. ;). Its for gimbal, the Pocket 4K is extremely annoying for that.

Probably gonna get a 12K LF when my relentless OG 4.6K stops working.

It’s frustrating to us UM4.6K owners with all the problems befalling other owners whose BMD cameras fail, forcing them to upgrade to the Cine 12K LF; some people like us just don’t have any luck!

One day I might also eventually say “Probably gonna get a [Pyxis] 12K LG when my relentless OG 4.6K stops working.”

Rick, if you can wait, I'm fairly positive we'll catch a blackmagic sale on the Pyxis 12k with 24 months :D

It took less than a year for Black Magic to reduce the price of the original 12K from $10,000 to $6000, so you may not need to wait for two years.

Maybe in a year BMD will get its electronic VariND technology figured out and launch a Pyxis 12K with built-in NDs, at which point a billion gear heads and a few cinematographers will sell off their current Pyxis 12K cameras to upgrade:)

Took less than a year for the 15K price tag of the URSA Cine 12K kit to get a 7K Body Only version. And, based on what I just did you can get close to everything in the 16.5K price tag UC12K+EVF Kit for just under 15K with 4 275Wh B-Mount Batteries and a Quad Charger. Now, I still have the UC Shoulder Mount Baseplate that isn't in that price tag I paid, but still it's all under that 16.5K price without batteries and charger. So with Batteries and Charger you're maybe looking at 20K still for that kit if you buy the UC12K+EVF Kit.

The point is that the UC12K came down in price within a year for the most part. The PYXIS 12K may see a price reduction in a year, but also that is unlikely unless another version is released that is a PYXIS Pro 12K.

Time will tell. Yet, I can't sing the praises of the 12K LF enough. Easily the best Blackmagic has done yet... outside of the 17K 65mm!

It’s a giant step to go from a Super35 system including accessories and particularly media storage and RAID in one’s exit suite.

It’s a banana step to go from that to the 17K medium format which not only significant media increases but most likely entirely new lenses for most aspirants. Easy to be an owner-operator for Super35. Challenging for that Cine 17K 65 world.

;)

That is the one thing that I've always disliked about the Pocket 4/6K line. Their shape makes them clumsy to put on gimbals, but then I also have grown to detest gimbal because they're such a pain to balance with focus motors and cine lenses and all that. Maybe it will be easier when I eventually get a Pyxis 12K to match my hopefully arriving soon UC 12K, since the primes I got are pretty compact.

Probably gonna get a 12K LF when my relentless OG 4.6K stops working.

The Ursa Minis were BMD's first "nailed it for professional production" cameras. The original Ursa was well designed, but optimized for the wrong market; I think the UC 12K is a return to that market.

While still BMD has the entry level college graduate cameras, and the lineup now goes all the way to IMAX, so there's going to be a lot less reason for BMD camera users to migrate off of the BMD line as they move up in the world and outgrow their entry level kit.

I bought a 4-Bay Thunderbay set up in RAID 10 for 24TB Storage & 24TB Backup to start. I’ll eventually do the 8-Bay Thunderbay. I’m fine with DAS over NAS as I don’t need to be connected to the net either my storage. But I bet it won’t take long to fill up the 24 TB.

Eventually I want to do 4X 16TB SSDs in the 4-Bay as RAID 0 for working storage with the 8-Bay being 8X 16TB HDDs as RAID 10 for the storage and back up of that working storage.

I'm thinking about investing in some of the BMD NAS solutions when budget allows. I'll probably start with one of the docks to start, since they're cost effective and expandable, and grow with need and budget.

I'm sure that even shooting at "only" 8K, we'll be generating a lot of data. :)

I'm all for doing a BMD NAS as well for the Cloud Store feature with simultaneous Cloud Sync. But I also want BMD Cloud Storage to drop in price. It's currently still 3X the price of Google Drive. So I can do 2 TB on Google Drive for $10/month, but it's $30/month for BMD Cloud.

To start I've been doing 500GB of BMD Cloud for testing with Proxies only. It's really nice. I just want to cost to come down as I said because this will be a far better solution than Google Drive or Drop Box in time.

Either way, you're right that 8K or 12K footage will eat up storage space. It's a lot of data.

I honestly don't know yet; she's scared of the dogs she's met in the park, but she's very timid when she isn't in her home territory.

And at home she's very territorial, but maybe she won't realize that puppies are small dogs?

It's fully operational now though. I haven't rigged up the follow focus yet, nor gotten the app connected yet, but it's looking nice so far.

And I'm definitely recommending the Shape Full Play batteries now. They're the least expensive and also highest capacity batteries I found. I left the camera on for over three hours, recording intermittently, and still had three bars out of five on the battery.

Choco’s a very perceptive puppy. Many dog owners warn me about their dogs and then Choco approaches them and they usually get on well or he understands they want to be left alone and he moves on. Cats on their home turf could be different I suppose. Maybe best not to tempt fate… but when the Pyxis arrives…!!!

That is one advantage of having a lot of catitude, which she has plenty of :)

I'm hoping for some sunny weather to try again; it will look nicer with some contrast, and I'll be able to show some actual dynamic range, but also my cat likes the sun.

Looking good. Hope you're enjoying the camera. I should've a shoot tomorrow (weather permitting) that I should be able to share some more footage. Sadly not a cat video. I'll have to check with some friends to see who I know that may have a cat to do some interesting stuff.

If the weather Rick ordered lasts long enough I might be able to take my cat to the beach for some beach car videos :D

The challenge is keeping an eye on her while also filming her, so it's going to depend on whether or not I'm able to bring some help to film. If not, it will be mostly sunset video after my cat runs out of energy.

Dunking models in the water in the Pacific Northwest is something I usually avoid, because most of the places where you can do it without getting swept away in the current and pummeled on the rocks is in the creeks with giant ice cubes often referred to as "glaciers" in them.

I'll have to leave that one for you for now. :ugeek:

Looked very good. The HFR was good too with the water slowly falling from the model. Nice to see what 8K 2.4:1 looks like since that may become my standard next year along with 9K.

Have you shot 9K 2.4:1 yet?

No, haven't done 9K 2.4:1 yet. Mainly because I expect it to have a similar enough look to everything I shot with the UMPG2 in 4.6K 2.4:1 with the exception of the dynamic range improvement. I've basically seen that field of view plenty over the last 9-years. I'm fully embracing VistaVision size.

That video does look nice! And it's incentive to try the wider aspect ratio options down the road.

I'm not concerned about the dynamic range differences between crops, though; the 12K has so much dynamic range that the little differences really aren't going to matter enough to care.
