Rename (or attach a label to) any timeline clip

PostThu Jul 03, 2025 8:07 am

(Original post below)

I have modified this post because the functionality for my original request already exists, just not in a very intuitive location.

Please add the ability to rename a clip in the right-click contextual menu of a timeline clip, or in the Clip menu on the main menu bar. Having it under Inspector > File is pretty dire and not a place you'd expect to look for something like this, because the "Name" property is listed under File and I am not looking to edit anything related to the clip's file.

Cheers.

ORIGINAL POST:
Like the title says, I want to use my own names for any clip that's in the timeline or attach a text label that is visible alongside the clip name.

I want this feature to be available for any clip on a timeline — that includes compound clips and other timelines.

I am already aware of the Media Pool > Clip Attributes renaming option - that's not what I want, because that will use that name for all instances of that clip in the timeline. Furthermore, that feature does not work on Timelines that are being used as clips (even though it should, but that's a separate issue).

Inspector > File > Name
There you can give individual names for all timeline items.
If you want to see those names also on Color page:
View > Timeline Thumbnail Info > Clip Name

Thanks, I actually knew about this feature before, which is why it was driving me nuts when I couldn't find it and made me wonder if I was hallucinating.

In which case, let me modify the RFE to have the clip name/label in a more intuitive location, for example in the right-click contextual menu or in the Clip menu on the main menu bar.

Can't make a shortcut for what I don't know exists...

This feature is extremely well hidden and could use better discoverability. Timeline clip renaming is not something that just exists as file metadata (as Resolve's UI would suggest), but is a pretty useful organisation tool for managing timelines that use multiple clips with the same or similar clip names. I would 100% expect this to exist on the clip's contextual menu, or under Clip on the menu bar. A double-click on the clip name to rename it in situ would be nice and fancy.
