Downtown J-Town

I decided to shoot some more anamorphic tests with my BlackMagic Cinema Camera in my home town.
I uploaded in full resolution so be sure to click on the highest option.
I graded in Resolve. I am getting the hang of how to get around in it. I even tracked some masks in there.

I will upload some DNGs soon.

What lens did you use?

Do you think you can get rid of the noise? It would be very helpful if someone show a "real situation streets video" handheld and everything, with out using raw footage. Using it as an amateur will probably show the real value of this spell. (show us what is the camera made of)

Why use youtube?

Theres a much noise on the street, try to export at 20mpps CBR to vimeo.

I used my tamron 17-50mm 2.8 with my runco 1.3 anamorphic adapter lens in front of it.

Really? What is wrong with you? I got out, lugged my camera around for two hours, spent an hour grading the footage, editing it, uploading it and posted it here for your benifet, and all you can come up with is saying that it "does not look good 1bit?" how about you put a little effort in expressing your thoughts (assuming you have any), instead of being off handedly insulting. I'm all for constructive criticism, but you have to give it some thought!

Dude im not hating and sorry if you got affended but i honestly felt the footage was was too noisy i didnt say it was youre error and thats why i asked if it was a youtube thing or an error??? the shots you chose were good i was only referring to the quality!!!! I am really thankful for you putting it up on here for us to look at..

Wow the DR is just nuts, the first 5 or 6 shots look just magical. I had just about excepted I wasn't going to be able to shoot my short film in december on this camera but I want it to look that magical so bad.

First couple of shots - awesome! Very nice, filmic look - especially with the Greyhound station images (location, location, location )

This looks great. Not sure what "noise" they are talking about. Probably confusing compression or downgrading for noise and watching in 360 instead of 720 on youtube. The adapter my be a little off.. I am not happy with the way I have it mounted at this point.

Off hand the one I can remember is the shot of the Thrive building that pans right from the tree. I punched up the sky with a color range selection, but it was including bits of the building, so I tracked a mask to subtract the building.

What was your workflow?

For this, I imported all the footage into Resolve, color corrected everything, and then exported ProRes files to premiere for editing.

Normally, I would apply a quick curve, then export everything for edit, then XML back into Resolve for CC. But since I didn't have a lot of footage, I went ahead and CC'd everything up front.

Its ether the 24p or just flash stuttering.

Oh mannn I was thinking of holding off this morning on the BMCC and spend more cash towards improving my other gear. But hot damn, I need that crispy good facemelting Dynamic Range Resolution. Blows my dslr out of the water.

Keep this footage coming to sooth the pain of waiting for the camera. ;p I love it.

This looks nice at 1080 in Youtube with my pipe. At some lower resolutions, Youtube compression messes it up quite a bit and steals what this camera has to offer, so anyone not using the Youtube 1080 setting, you are not seeing it.

I personally prefer more punch and even added light, but I understand how a lot of you like the mellower look.

It definitely shows off the camera.

Yeah, color grading is so subjective.. but the great thing is that you can do whatever you want with the fies that this camera puts out. So many options!

I am due for a new purchase and kind of on the fence. I was planning on the sachtler fsb-4 but now that I am going to get the BMCC; once its kited out, it may be over the weight threshold for the fsb-4. Because of the weight issue, I am considering a miller compass 12-15 or the sachtler fsb-6. I appreciate your input.

My tripod is a bogen 3066 head and sticks.. it holds the camera just fine.. but its really more of an ENG tripod. It doesn't have any nice features, and is not on a ball head, so leveling is a real pain.

How ironic I have the same set up. Amen on the non ball head leveling fiasco. That's kind of why I am considering the upgrade. My previous use with sachtlers made life so nice but the price certainly is painful! Thanks for the speedy response.

Hey Watermoore, I would certainly go with the FSB-6.. I've got the same one (but using other legs with it as I found the original ones from the Sachtler kit to be a little "flimsy" for my taste) ... I even used a fully kitted out EPIC on it once (was more of a last resort/emergency thing) ... but it worked quite well!
Another no budget shoot I used a RED ONE MX on it.. it sort of worked but it was definitely over the FSB6's threshold

I'm using the same lens on my 60D along with an Panasonic adapter ... Uuh, I can't wait to use it with the BMCC ... same for the tokina 11-16: It should provide images without any vignetting on the BMCC.

I'm curious why you used a anamorphic adapter? Does it give your lens a wider field of view? I've never used one so I don't quite understand its value.

By the way, I found the video quality of your clip on YouTube looked fine as far as compressed streaming video goes.

It does make the FOV wider.. but because of the way it is designed, it cannot have a lens wider than about 24mm behind it, so that is not a real gain for it.

The real reason is two fold.

1. I like the look that anamorphic lenses give you. Bokeh, flares, etc.

2. it allows me to have a wider aspect for my film without losing resolution. If I wanted to have a wide aspect ratio without the anamorphic lens, I would have to just crop the top and bottom. This way, I can just squeeze the image down, and keep all that resolution.

Yeah, doesn't the LA7200 have a really big front element? My adapter is like 77mm on front and back. I think that may be the reason why I can't get wider.
