WPP "deep pixel" workflow explained

PostThu Jan 15, 2015 4:07 pm

Hi there everyone, this is unfortunately not a tutorial but rather a request to have someone explain exactly how the "deep pixel" workflow is put together inside Fusion.

I know about the principle, but need help with the setup inside Fusion since I cannot find any good description or tutorial on how to make use of it inside Fusion. I know how to produce the necessary WPP XYZ data from software like 3ds max and Maya, so what nodes are needed in Fusion and how to connect them properly?

I'm simply looking for results like this: Image

Thanks!

Hi there.

The WPP concept is explained in the manual as well.
The attached comp shows a very simple setup to get you started from the initial 3D Rendering,
over displacing the Shape3D, to adding new elements in comp.

Cheers.

Eric.

As the compositor that did that shot, I will take that as a compliment!
There was a ton of work on that shot, however the deep pixel was very straight forward and easily implemented.
Once you work through Eric's example, you'll see how easy and powerful it can be.

Have fun!

Oh thats fine, is there a Screenshot of the comp possible? The great work for this was also by the Mattepainting and Texture Artits. I study this shot as the film comes out.

Here are some making of:

Let's not forget the insane 3D department. Every single building in there is fully modeled.
There are very few shortcuts there. The crowd work was sensational.

You are very lucky as a compositor when your handed material like this to work with. It never happened before that, or since.

There is a 15 minute breakdown on www.uncharted-territory.com that is simply mind blowing.
worth a look.

Entire VFX budget, for hundreds of full cg shots was 3 million!
It's a testimony to artist before software and budget.

I downloaded Eric's example file but still am having trouble understanding what's going on. I think in part because it's not using actual 3d rendered images with all of the different exr channels. Does anyone know of a good video tutorial that goes over this process step by step? I just watched Rony's intro to fusion 8 video which was fantastic and made sense - w w w youtube com / watch?v=S1Wu7JthR2c and I'm hoping to find something along those lines for the deep pixel usage. Thank you!
