I had same problem on W8.1 a few days ago, except when i launched Fusion, it did not crash but it froze on the initialization screen and Fusion window stopped responding. Even after half an hour, it would still remain frozen, and would not start.
For me, wiping C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\Fusion folder solved the problem, although i had to re-configure the software from sratch.
My specs are following:
Windows 8.1
Core i7 5930k
15GB RAM
GeForce GTX 970
Fusion installed on 120GB SSD drive.
