SUNSET - John Brawley and MFT Blackmagic

PostWed Jan 02, 2013 6:09 am

DNG Links (Belong to JB but on my Google Drive): https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B8-f-XPnmOp6dm1GVDBaaXY2WTQ/edit

Whilst doing a pre shoot for a feature film "The Turning" i took the chance to shoot some scenes with the m4/3 Blackmagic Cinema Camera and the super awesome SLR Magic 12mm T1.6 as well as the voigtlander 17.5mm T0.96.
The day shots are all with the SLR magic 12mm and the shots after sunset of the reeds are the 17.5mm Voightlander. This was shot RAW and with a single node of correction. All handheld with no rig.

John just uploaded this bit from exploring during a shoot he was on. Nothing major, he just wanted to share some shots with the Voigt 17/0.95 and SLR 12/1.6.

Saw that he was using the SLR12 and pretty much begged him to post up hahaha. I'm grateful, as I've been dying to see the combo. Some of these shots are actually stopped down reasonably, if anyone's worried about DOF (which I can't see how you can be by now) then this should clear it up.

I also bothered him about DNGs and got some from him to play with over the last few days, again quick picks because he's on a feature right now shooting. I've uploaded them for him.

Thanks again, JB.

John also shows how to expose for raw...

Colours are beautiful. They've done a pretty good job with both those lenses.

Thanks for sharing.

Does anyone know what the exposure slider's measurements are in Resolve? I got that exposure/image by adjusting two stops (-2.00), white balance, and contrast. I always assumed each 1.00 value was a stop?

I'd say it would be stops. It's possible that ACR's and Resolve are some different sort of algorithm maybe.

Pretty sure Resolve is stops. To show another point of difference, this is the default in CaptureOne:

And this is down one stop in C1 (plus some quick colour adjustments):

C1 definitely defaults to a darker image. Also interesting is the preview by Google Drive on my computer:

Closer to the C1 default than OSX 'quick look', preview, etc which looks like the 'default' pic Nick posted.

The default images you are getting is just the RAW converters best guess as its not reading the exposure meta data.

Similar thing happens when you open a new DSLR RAW file before CameraRaw (or the RAW app you are using) is updated to read the meta data.

Love the vibrancy in that second one, Cap. That's one thing I have to figure out how to do in Resolve.

@Adam - yeah, but the interesting thing to me is the C1 default in terms of exposure for the BMCC DNG's seems to be unique (i tested Resolve, Lightroom and Aperture which all default basically the same). Yet C1's default exposure for say 5Dmk3 files is basically the same as all other apps.

@Kholi - thanks, i'll try recreate it in Resolve now too. I do love the colour i can get from C1 though.

Actually literally just figured it out. Never tried adjusting RGB Gain independently, worked great. That was one thing that I could do in Lightroom but couldn't suss out in R9.

Sweet.

Cool, do you mean the RGB mixer in resolve?

I did this in Resolve just now, but i used similar tools to those i used in C1 to get there (used the color picker in C1 and used hue curves in resolve), not exactly the same as my C1 output but close:

I see some strange vertical lines in the picture. Was this shot with the BETA 1.2 firmware?

I wouldn´t care if it was on a Canon 5D Footage or other heavy compressed Material but this should definitely not be there in a RAW picture. Did John post any info about his settings? The blue channel is completely damaged.

That's called aliasing.

Maybe I'm wrong but that's not the texture of the plant it self?? that kind of plants use to have that bumped texture and it looks like that to me, but as I say, maybe i'm just wrong. But if kind of aliasing I think it's quite subtle to see it at first sight for most of the people out there :)
Happy new year.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me at all to be honest. I have noticed it in hair, which by now a lot of people know is a big deal for me since I shoot a lot of beauty. But it's not as offensive as the 5D was, and I know there are ways around it.

It will bother some people, so when I get my camera one of the very first things I'm gonna commit time to is meeting up with a BMCuser named REDGamma that's likely to have a strong solution for aliasing, without a hit to resolution.

I'm also going to try Caprock filters, and I know someone that can speak with the maker of those, so he could figure out a strength that works with Blackmagic without taking a serious hit to resolved detail.

Gotta get the camera first though! So much to explore. Can't wait.

Edit: Oh and I'm gonna answer the question about Super 16 lenses and how much of a post crop you need to make it work, if it's worth it, etc. That's gonna be an interesting one and I'm definitely curious about it.

That's moiré and to be perfectly honest, I doubt anyone is ever going to notice this particular case of moiré at 25fps.
