Nodes won't connect?

PostTue Feb 16, 2016 4:27 pm

I am VERY new to Fusion (although experienced with After Effects, and some experience of Flame and Avid DS as online tools - not a total beginner with vfx/finishing software!), and have what I suspect is a bit of a beginner question. However, it's one that I haven't been able to find an answer for by Googling.

I have a very simple set up, made from following the first 'Introduction to 3D Space' video on the Blackmagic website. Why can't I connect the output (little red square is what I'm trying to connect from) of the Duplicate3D node to the input (little green triangle is what I'm trying to go to) of the Merge node?

Here's an image, which hopefully will help clarify my poor explanation!

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Using V8 build 23 of Fusion, on OSX 10.11.3.

Any tips of good learning resources would be great too, I clearly need them!

Cheers,

Michael

Wrong datatype. Fusion has numerous built in datatypes, and you can only connect outputs to inputs if they have a matching supported datatype. In this case you are trying to connect an Image input with a 3D Scene output.

To make an image, use Renderer3D.

Hi Chad,

Thanks for the reply!

So in this instance I need a "Renderer3D" node between the "Duplicate3D" (or any 3D) node before I can connect to the "Merge" node? Makes sense, but weird as I swear it wasn't in the video.

To help me understand, I also tried texturing a sphere by using a "Loader" node to bring in an image, but couldn't connect that node to the "Shape3D" node. Would I need a "Renderer3D" node between the 2 there as well?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Yes the Render3D is needed after a 3D tool to be combined with 2D tools (merge in this example)

You can use a loader as the input of a 3Ph(phong) or 3Bl(Blinn) and use that as a texture... depending what you're doing you may need UV coordinates.

I'm not overly familiar with advanced texturing in Fusion, but here are some places to get you started.
