Hey Andrew...awesome work!!!! this is the best BMCC footy Ive seen so far. I would love to know which ssd's, and your whole setup you used to film this short...Im still trying to decide which accessories to buy and would love to know what you used here..especially as far as SSD'S and how many?

Im really tired of seeing new footage of the BMCC with boring montages and people not knowing what the hell they are doing as "cinematographers", but this footage is put together very well and looks great.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm waiting for a film to start but I'll answer your questions when it's over. Big Sur is too beautiful it's kind of impossible to make a film that isn't beautiful.

How did you do the slow motion at 1min10 ? Did you use a software like twixtor or something like that ?

Excellent job on grading this. It really shows this camera's Raw power.

Did you shot this raw? I Could say yes, but i'm just want to be sure
What did you use in order to capture the shot (2:48 / 2:52)
did you color grade it in resolve?
Any ND filters?
What editing software did you use?
did you have any problems keeping your saliva in your mouth while grading the footage?

Answering any of these questions will be appreciated.

Thanks! I use Sandisk Extreme 240gb SSDs. Everything was pretty basic for this shoot. I used a tripod, slider, and occasional handheld stabilizer. The camera was stock with a lens attached. No fancy rig or anything. I did have a jacket to put over my head to be able to perfectly see the LCD at times. Very handy tool!

Josh, you definitely want to shoot raw! Nothing against the Prores footage because it's amazing, but it's hard to beat uncompressed raw!

Hi Rocket, All raw. Nothing special or different about that shot from other steadicam type shots, just that it was close to the edge. AKA don't try this at home. All grading done in Lightroom. I mostly used the Sigma 8-16mm with no filtration, but when I used the 24-70 or 70-200 I had BW ND available. Edited in Premiere. I've found a bib works well for the saliva problem!

Don't know about Kholi but I have an EF mount already. Loving it. Very tempted to put an order in for a M43 version too.

Buy a cheap calculator and do the math!

I switched to MFT mount a bit ago and now I'm just waiting and growing ulcers in the meantime. xD

I was searching the last few weeks an alternative cause there's no BMCC yet in my country which is in the EU and I'm the second person who's order it. I was thinking about getting Lumix GH3 mft and cancel my order for BMCC...and then I saw your video! no way man, I'm totally sticking with BMCC! It's a great tool for people with your imagination! I'll say it once more! fantastic job Andrew!!! I only have one question, in your opinion it's better to stick with the EF version or wait for mft (which is passive)?

JB: BOTH! I'm greedy. Sometimes it’s really handy. If I did have to choose one of the other though, I do find it hard to go past m4/3. Mainly because of the way I can scale up to the full on PL mount cinema lenses I'm usually have access to OR, I can go more spare and use regular and inexpensive and small stills lenses....m4/3 is a bit more flexible and I don't have any EF glass.

As for Andrew, I'll say the same thing I said on his page at Vimeo, please tip his video. He deserves it. Job well done!

Gorgeous video, nicely graded; I don't care for the editing or music. The music is Hans Zimmer (agaiiin?!) and motivates quick cuts to what -- I think -- should be long, deliberate takes to give the viewer more time to stare at the beauty. Also, the shot choice jumps from subject to subject instead of telling a visual story like a classic montage. There could be more importance than just "pretty pictures set to music" and that's done with the cut. If it's the latter, great, it gets the job done, but it could have meant something more, delivered emotion. The shot driving away from the beauty could have been used at the end to suggest pushing away from the beauty, or used at the beginning to create suspense as we head toward... whatever's out there. Despite my personal opinion of the cut, however, this is BY FAR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FOOTAGE FROM THE BMCC I HAVE YET SEEN. Beautiful colors, effective composition, sharp natural imagery and some lovely juxtaposition between the smallness of Man and the breadth of nature. I've watched the video several times (which is why I critique it) and it serves as a reminder that not only is the BMCC, in the right hands, a fantastic tool, and that God is one helluva gaffer.

Thanks for sharing that info Eduardo. I watched every interview from John Brawley and Philip Bloom regarding BMCC, obviously I missed that part! I run in a very tight budget, so at this point both of them is out of the question unfortunately. I also know that the EF version will come sometime soon, and that the MFT version will take a lot more time. Also EF glasses it’s more easy to find but also more expensive than MFT, at least in my country. I’ m searching for a voightlander and an SLR Magic the last month and it seems impossible to find...Also there’s the metabones adaptor that will come sometime the near future which will be great for the MFT version. As you can see I have to put all those things down in order to come up with a final decision. Thanks again for your help!

Nice job. Illustrates what a nice piece of music can do for some lovely footage of Nature. I am quite a fan of that piece (in the movie Inception) by Hans Zimmer. I like the way you edited to match the music, and did a build in the spectacle to match the build in the music. Carry on! The world can always use nice stuff like this.

PS, I feel sorry for people looking at this on laptops or less, with tinny speakers! You have built a nice mood, one might even say a therapeutic mood!

Good to hear. Personally the EF makes a lot of sense because I own good EF glass, but also have an MFT on order (just in case) and I'm hoping when it's ready to ship I'll be able to afford/justify keeping it. The MFT is a really good match for this camera.

Thanks for your honest feedback. Just think of it as more of a teaser or sampler. I would love to make a longer film more along the lines of what you described, but this was more of a trip video on steroids made for an online audience.

Thanks, I'm glad it fits for you. I do try to fit the music to the footage and in this one the music just really helped sell the raw power of the ocean.

Yes, it's juts 30p played back at 24p. One thing I've noticed about footage shot like this is that most things you won't really notice the speed. You just won't think twice about it, until gravity comes into play. Watch someone jump off a 2 foot platform and you instantly notice that it's slower than it should be in real life. I think we're really good at judging the speed of falling objects.

The water does seem really slow in some shots.

Hi Andrew,

We've got a similar project coming up for a client soon (albeit in a very different part of the world). What sort of rig did you use for the shots from the moving vehicle?

You've managed to give me a case of both cabin fever AND red rock fever with your photography

This short was enough to convince me to take the plunge. BMD should be using both this and the "Drive through Snow Canyon" shorts as promos once they're caught up with pre-orders.

There are a lot of footage from the BMCC floating around the net; enough for me to say "we have seen it all". And yet, with this video from Andrew, I can confidently say that, "we have come to meet the man behind the camera". All projects begin with an idea, and yours was really mature. Kudos Andrew, and I'll be looking for your name in the credits.
