How to conceal like Resolve's node sizing method in Fu

PostTue May 31, 2016 6:41 pm

I have a shot where there is sensitive information on a paper tag that needs to be "removed".

Because of time constraints, I did what I know how to do and did it in Resolve using node sizing. If you aren't familiar with this, it is done by tracking the object you want to remove, moving the tracker window to the part of the shot you want to use as concealer (in this case blank part of paper tag), and going into node sizing and moving the concealer over the object to be removed.

I have since been trying to figure out how to do it in Fusion but I am missing something.

I can get it to work pretty well if I stabilize the shot first (set Tracker operation to BG only), but that is not an option in this case, it is deliberately handheld and meant to be slightly moving.

The problem I am having is that the concealer is also moving and shows other parts of the frame, not just the blank paper.

Source image feeds Tracker BG, the track is good, Operation is Match Move and FG over BG.
Tracker feeds BG of a Transform node which feeds the BG of a Merge; the FG of the Merge is also fed by the Tracker. A polygon cuts the shape and is attached to the effect mask input of the Merge.

I am sure it's something very simple but so far it's eluded me. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

Hi Mark.

There are various ways to achieve this in Fusion.

One is to could use your stabilized shot,
move the concealer (from the stabilized shot) by means of a masked Transform to the intended position
copy & paste your tracker and set it to unstabilize to get the motion back.

Thanks Eric!

It's working much better now; concealer now stays on the right part of the paper.

Still having to animate the polygon a bit but that happens in Resolve with node sizing, too.

So basically it requires two trackers, one for BG and one for FG, or am I misunderstanding you?

Thank you Eric, much obliged! Nice to see different ways of approaching it.

I think I have a handle on it now. :D
