Shutter angle for LED lighting?

PostFri Feb 01, 2013 1:29 am

Hi everyone,

I am preparing for a shoot on Saturday/Sunday and I was wondering if there are recommended shutter angles for shooting with LED lights when recording at 24fps, 25fps, 30fps? I bought a Yongnuo YN-300 LED Video Light and will be mixing this LED light with any daylight that comes in through windows.

I am still not sure whether to shoot the project in 24fps, 25fps or 30fps, but I guess that's a personal choice to suit the topic and use. I am leaning towards 25fps, as the work will be shown online first, but I want to keep broadcasting options open.

Any suggestions? :)

Using power outlet for any lights, you are 50Htz? If so, that may point you toward 25p. In Australia we are 50Htz, general domestic light sources flicker after 1/100 in most cases. Domestic LED in the apartment carpark allowed up to 1/200 and 1/400 then flicker became an issue, however, other lights were causing flicker until I lowered to 1/100. If only daylight and LED battery powered DC, you may go higher, although I don't know the lights you refer. Just some ideas, no advice...

Wouldn't you want to test using the LED under AC and DC power yourself and see the results before your weekend shoot? Try 25fps with a variety of shutter angles but you should be good with 180*. Is their documentation with the LED lights that indicates how they'll behave with various power and frame rates?

Thanks for your replies. The LED lamp is battery powered (NP-F type battery), does this mean there should be no problem with flicker? I only received the YN300 LED today, so I couldn't test it yet. Just wondering if I should be aware of something specific when using LED lighting for video, especially when mixing it with proper daylight? I'll try to quickly do some test shots at 25fps / 180 degree shutter angle before my flight tomorrow.

DC may be good, usually can increase shutter speed, whereas AC wall source flicker often an issue earlier. Depending on the light design, some dimming of LED may be done by pulsing the lights on/off very quickly to reduce light intensity, whereas others don't. Generally, mostly up to 1/100 or 90 degress at 25p is usually ok from AC wall outlet. If you can not shoot at 180 degress, then there is something wrong. As Rick said, and you confirmed, test. Have a good shoot.

I have a Yongnuo 160s and I haven't had any problems with flicker. Granted I was mainly shooting at 30fps, but a variety of shutter angles.

I imagine if you just do a quick test at various settings, where your LED is the main lighting source, and you should be able to see flicker if there is any.

From other models of LED lights, I've only noticed flicker when it's dimmed considerably.

Jim, were your LEDs powered by DC or AC?

Wouldn't you want to analyze using the LED under AC and DC energy yourself and see the outcomes before your few days shoot? Try 25fps with a wide range of shutter perspectives but you should be excellent with 180. Is their certification with the LED lighting that indicates how they'll act with various energy and structure rates?
