here's some test footage for a doc Im making about my father in law who is living with ALS. 4.6k, Naty light.

Rick, the Senn ME66/K6 is one of my favorite mics, works great, compact size for a shotgun. It also makes a nice handheld interview mic.

Okay, based on the support it gets, I think I'd better go with that for events. Just enough time to get it delivered!!! And a lot cheaper than the Sennheiser AVX system which will need to wait. I could use the Canon shotgun with the Canon HV20, but I've decided it's too distracting to have two cameras recording when one will do. Remember my eager assistant has never shot video.

Since I want to cover events that are primarily music, I decided to go with Sennheiser MKH416, Rycote Tac!T XLR cable, Rode SM3 shock mount, Ikan ELE-CS cold shoe adapter, Wimberley BS-100 brass bushing ⅜"->¼".

Finally got my Reel Edited. Let me know what you think, about 85 percent was shot with BMCC 2.5k.

Here is my first test with davinci resolve and one of the first movies (ever) for me. I just did a few short clips with the bmmcc before and here i have a short movie about the trip to cambridge last weekend.

Please let me know if you find any improvements or tips for me, that would be nice. Thank you.

I think you have some good shot's in your video, I'd love to see a story line in something like this. Visually telling a clear story. I think that would be challenging and great to learn the art of story telling with just images and music.

Filmed with Canon lenses, 50, 24, and 70-200 ( Our fav).

Not bad for your first outing with the URSA. She is a beauty. Well done flashbacks with the gritty grade.

So this is my second attempt at shooting a live music performance. Also my first attempt at a multi-camera shoot. I used three cameras, BMPCC, BMMCC and the Sony a6300. The sony is nice, but 8 bits is not as good as 10 bits even at 4K.

Gene, just listening to this on the iPad, but I couldn't herpar the bassist or the bass guitar. Not sure how the recordist was picking up sound, but it seemed there wasn't a feed from the stage right. Comment?

Yes, you hit the nail on the head Rick, I also noticed the audio sounded like something was missing. I suggest you work in recording audio,mor get a audio recording person involved. Mic'ing and recording a band is not an easy task, and to do it right takes more than two or three mics. A drum kit alone requires at least three mics, plus one for the drimmer's voice, if he sings too. A multitrack recorder is useually used, and the sound track edited in post to get the desired balance in the overall sound.

When shooting a music performance, audio is more important than the video part.

Spot on Rick, as usual. I had set up a recorder in the sound booth and signaled him to start recording, he apparently turned it on, but didn't hit record. So no sound from the board. I had setup a recorder in the audience, and that is what you hear. It must have had its low pass filter on.

So maybe third time is a charm?

Third time a charm? I'll never forgive myself for asking someone to hit the record button on a camcorder at my oldest daughter's wedding. They hit something and I thought all was well, but when I checked the camera wasn't recording! So that's 'our' first mistake. Your audio here is at least saved by your backup, but let's call that 'our' second mistake. The third time will be perfect so let's do something together!

Rick, ouch! I hope your daughter forgave you for it? Fortunately for me, this is just for sh*ts and grins. The band is tickled pink with anything I do and I get to use them as guinea pigs. It's been a great learning experience for me. What's the weather like in Vancouver?

In Victoria, this time of year is warm Mediterranean climate. Sunny and calm days in the 20s, but we just finished having a 27-29 degree day.

Here's something I recently put together for a client.

The Killington Group Market Video - Summer Activities


I shot a lot of footage recently with the URSA Mini 4.6K EF in both RAW 4:1 and UHD ProRes 422 HQ. And then there's the footage I shot with the BMCC 2.5K EF as far back as 2-years ago. For example the 4th of July footage is from 2014. That footage is HD ProRes 422 HQ. So quite a lot of stock footage from events I've shot with the BMCC over the years combined with the newer footage captured on the 4.6K.

The opening aerial shot is from 2010 and a Sony PMW-EX1, which was stabilized in Fusion and then I did the text graphic in After Effects with Cinema 4D Lite. I tried to see if I could go up in a helicopter with the URSA Mini 4.6K, but the person who had that helicopter had a ski accident this last year and was really injured. They also sold the helicopter recently.

Everything was edited & graded in DaVinci Resolve 12.5. I also used Fusion to merge two separate takes of the shot of the fisherman with the boat in the background. One had the boat and the other didn't, and I wanted the boat because it added to the shot.

Davi, regardless of the road we take, it's important to have something to say in the end and that you have achieved in your beautifully directed final scene. If I might suggest something about the road taken in your short: I would shorten the overall length perhaps by half, introduce the homeless woman very near the beginning; interleave the doctor's dialogue and the boss's dialogue with only a very brief initial link to the visuals of the doctor in his office and the boss in his office; the gentlemen in the hall are entertaining, but concentrate on the bits with action and keep the repetition of the "inside out" as you have done but perhaps distort the sound of all these characters' voices as the short continues; perhaps the selection of the music he hears should have a special significance and consider it much more important than the static from his phone headset; build tension aurally to match your visuals of the disturbed young man; and transform that aural tension during the final scene in which his purpose in rescuing another person brings some peace if only a sweeter sound in his head.

I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my short and give me thoughtful feedback. I'll try to apply what I can, still working on purchasing music or finding a composer in Seattle. Music is such an important part of this short. I'm glad you got the ending message. I really appreciate it, this has been a complete passion project to the core.
