Here is another URSA Mini Delay sob story, I literally just lost $600 as I took out a special credit card because of a rewards rebate. Spend $4,000 within 90 days and get $600 back.

So I just looked and my accounts been open for 94 days, so I was four days to late to realize I should purchase gift cards!

Ordered from Adorama on July 2nd. Shipped today. Looks like the backlog is getting smaller. BTW Adoramas get a free $600 shotgun mic deal cant be beat. Its a loss leader but they didn't pressure me to buy anything else.

Can you post the first 4 digits of your serial when you get it? Mine was 3114 I received the shipment last Tuesday...

Good news !

I finally found one in stock, in France. Check "Photocineshop", I just bought one and their website still show "In Stock", maybe they received a couple of them. Took the EF, apparently they have a PL as well.

I checked a few days ago and they didn't have any. I did the bank transfer early today, now I only have to wait ^^

I'll check for magenta and post dng's on the dedicated topic.

Of course its shipping today when you ordered just a month ago, you live in America the only country BM seem to give a @@@@ about! Meanwhile us in the UK who ordered a year ago get nothing!

Received mine today. Not promising. Some vignetting and magenta I think. Serial is 3134 something. Tried a few quick tests with Sigma 18-35 and one without the lens on a white wall:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/c0i5k3c4qzoe ... SvVga?dl=0

Firmware is 3.3 from factory.

Edit - Actually, not hardly as bad as some of the others listed in the Magenta forum. Will do some real tests tomorrow.

Edit - Negligible magenta. Everything seems pretty schnazzy

B&H is telling me August 8. I ordered early June. I returned my first camera. Loved it. But it had magenta issues. Let's see if 4.0 and the new batch makes all the bad stuff gone. B&H also matched the Adorama deal. Got a free shoulder kit. Nice.

Did you have to request the shoulder kit or did they just throw that in?

Just got a shipping notification from B&H this morning (8/3) for the Ursa mini 4.6k EF. It's expected to arrive on 8/8. I ordered on 6/14/16. It seems they are finally starting to ship a lot out now. I'm in the states, but maybe this could be a good sign for overseas buyers as well.

Actually I goofed. They sent me a shotgun mic AT BP 7403 and a Rycote Softy. I did ask them to match Adorama's deal. There were two. This one is actually better. The shoulder mount deal is also good though.

Ive talk to a spanish reseller who said me the problem is from the company who make the 4.6k sensor. Blackmagic has no control over this company and the delay come for that...

I think BM should think to break the contract with that company :P

It' s sad but BMD is a company very unlucky in the choice of sensors manufacturers.

Remember:
Long delays with 2,5 cameras sensors with bulk glass contamination and unresolved Black Hole problem.
The blooming problem with pocket ( solved...) .
The black hole and FPN with 4K sensors.
Global shutter "gone" before starting regular production with 4.6 sensors and then magenta problems.

You can have all the good intentions to build a competitive "Formula One car" but if those who provide you the engine ( you don't' build engine...) and so you pay...pay a lot of money so as he told you that you will be able to contain your lap delay in a few seconds per lap compared to the more '"strong teams" and instead you take minutes...a losing battle...

...very very unlucky.

Ehhh... Who cares. This stuff is all over inflated. I'm a producer and usually hire in cameras but like to have something cheap in house for low budget stuff. Nothing comes close to the value they've provided.

Does their communication suck? Yes.
Have they over-promised and under delivered on occasion? Yes
Do the cameras have quirks? Yes

But at the end of the day they're giving great value. If they promised a little less and delivered a little faster everyone would be saying they're revolutionizing the low end market like Red did with the high end market. The first few years of RED were pretty rocky too. Yes, RED communicates to customers all the time but didn't that lead to the CEO getting into a forum fight with users and resigning in disgust?

In any event. I did some more tests on the 4.6K I received this week. Definitely no noticeable magenta shift. Here are a couple JPEGS pulled from RAW files shot on a white wall. Exposure dropped 4 stops and saturation pushed to 100% No magenta. No issues with XLR ports, No apparent quality issues I've noticed so far. Looks like they've straightened things out.

...all true but remember how many men working at RED camera project from 2005 to August 2007 when first cameras delivered ?? Maybe 20...It was a crazy and revolutionary project from scratch... a milestone. BMD is a BIG company with much experience and technology is unbelievable which has experienced repeated problems of this type with external manufacturers.

I just received my 4.6K EF :D Ordered this Tuesday from a French reseller.

Quickly tested magenta, f8 through my window with my sigma 24-35, I don't see any magenta on the screen.

I don't have a card reader yet (will buy one this afternoon) to check on my computer.
I will post DNG's in the mageta topic asap :)

SO HAPPY

Re: 4.6k Shipments

A couple of points to consider. First Blackmagic does not directly distribute their cameras. They are distributed by a third part wholesale distributer, who in turn sends the cameras out to the various global markets via regional distributors, whom in turn send the cameras to the individual sellers. So if BM says their cameras are shipping, they mean the distributor is getting cameras from BM. Now the actual market distribution is going to be $ driven by the distributors, spreading the cameras around. If they only get 100 cameras to fill 1,000 orders, there are going to be shortages, until production can catch up on the demand.

Why the EU distributor is not getting enough cameras formits market, or shipping to the UK is a mystery, but this is not under BM direct control. Perhaps the lack of cameras in the UK, is a form of backlash at UK decision to withdraw from the EU? One can only guess at this point. If CVP is the main EU distributor (I do not know), and they are not getting cameras from the main BM global distributor is an interesting point. But since cameras are appearing in parts of Europe (France) than someone (CVP or ?) is telling Porkeys here.

Main distributor in the UK is Holdan Ltd. When I asked them their sales staff said they couldn't get any answers from BM about when they were getting any in, which is pretty standard as this happens with every BM product.

James... The BMPC 4K produces some of the most beautiful images available at any price! The 2.5K and the Pocket as well. Yes. I know, if you have enough light etc. It's always going to be something. The existing lineup by BM is great. There are allowances you have to make and stuff you have to add to kit it out, but the results speak for themselves. The Ursa Mini has better ergonomics. The 4K mini has the same sensor as the BPMC. The 4.6 sensor is so gorgeous, but it has issues that need to be worked out. I don't work there and I have no way of judging the wisdom of their silence, or customer service. I'm just saying I love shooting with the cameras that have been out for a while. I don't need anything else. That didn't stop me from buying a UM4.6 and shooting with it for a couple of months. I mostly loved it. But yes there were a few occasions where the magenta tint bugged me so I sent it back and I resumed shooting with my existing cameras. I immediately placed a new order for another one though, because I enjoyed shooting with it and I loved the images. Hopefully, the new one won't have any issues. Then I will keep it. If not, it goes back. Why would I put up with all the shenanigans? Because, eventually they get it right. It's been the same for almost all their releases. And because... The price is way lower than anything else with this kind of image quality. And the dynamic range, 12 bit raw, every flavor of Prores, using EF lenses, using off the shelf media, free copy of Resolve. Hey wait a minute... Blackmagic should be paying me for this! lol. I sound like a fan boy. I'm not. Everyone knows they scamper and hide when the stuff doesn't work. Just when you are ready to pull the plug though, they manage to deliver. We are pioneers as they are. We are bound to take a few arrows as we explore. Let's hope BM learns from every experience and fixes things enough to keep customers and stay in business! In the mean time those of you with the previous cameras... Happy shooting!

Hey Norman, thanks for the tips, I already have a BMPCC which is great in all honesty however I'm waiting for the URSA Mini 4.6k to do a bit marketing push with AD agencies along with an increase in rates, I really want to try and move in a different direction and do more creative work on a regular basis, who knows if it will happen but I'm going to have a good go at it.

My thoughts on the 4k are I'm sure it will give you an amazing image, however for me I don't want to invest in a sensor which is around 5 years old, it just seems a bit silly to me, I don't often get a bulk sum of money to spend on gear so I really want to invest in the best I possibly can with the money available.

I have been pretty vocal lately about the lack of camera's coming into the UK mainly out of frustration, however the world keeps spinning and its only a camera at the end of the day I will get my hands on one eventually. Im sure BM are working hard on getting these produced and ironing out the kinks.

For the meantime I will wait patiently for the 4.6K.

Fwiw my new 4.6K will arrive by the end of the week according to B&H. Fingers crossed that we will be seeing a new batch without issues. I will keep you posted.

Please let me know how you get on with it and if all of the magenta kinks have been ironed out.

No obvious magenta issues like before. I haven't done any extensive testing but so far the images look great.

Even if you were correct, Black Magic could and should apply pressure / seek answers from this whole sale distributor as it's their name that is being dragged through the mud.

Hey Carlos don't thank me yet, I don't think he has it in stock ..so you may get a call from him telling you it's not in stock. I won't say here who he spoke to .. But when you speak to him he'll let you know what the distributor says about an ETA for the 4.6k PL to his store. And if you already payed I don't mind you getting the first PL that comes in ahead of me. :)

Thanks Donnell, I did pay but I would not take your place. I will take what ever he has or expects after they fill their waiting list if that is the case. I will take an EF if that is what he has in stock at the moment. Most likely as you indicated, the website inventory does not reflect the true inventory, but if they are able to provide an ETA that would be good enough for now.

I will take an EF if that is what he has in stock at the moment. Most likely as you indicated, the website inventory does not reflect the true inventory, but if they are able to provide an ETA that would be good enough for now.

No worries, more than likely he'll get EF Mounts in first.

4.6k Shipments

PostMon Aug 15, 2016 3:31 pm

From what I've heard the ratio of URSA Mini EF cameras to PL cameras is quite high. But if you are interested in the Mini PL/B4 camera, it does have some advantages at a potentially higher cost point though for the PL lenses. I think either camera is a great choice, but the PL camera with its removable mount is a winner from my perspective.

Since I only am interested in passive cinema lenses, I understand I might be swimming against the stream; that the EF mount does have its own advantages as well for most people. I expect within a month, we shall know if Hot Rod Cameras will be offering a passive EF mount to replace the Mini PL mount so that the Mini PL camera will have a native solution for PL, B4, and EF lenses. Sweet.

You and me both Rick, just got my new Wooden Camera MFT/PL Pro adapter, so,I,can adjust the back focus of my Angie zoom lens and get the SuperSpeeds set correctly for witness Mark accuracy.

I got the flange distance set correctly for the Super speed so,witness Mark was on. But, then the Angie zoom back focus was off enough to throw out the focus at the zoom in mark. Reset it for the Angie, it is off by .001 of of an inch difference. So guess I need to call Dulcos to see if the Angie can be adjusted to correct FFD.
Cheers

How can you work with a lens that's off by 1/1000th of an inch? Actually how can you measure that?

Rick, and the Wooden Camera shims for their MFT/PL Pro adapter are in .001, .002. .003 and .0015 and .0005 of an inch thicknesses. Then I set a lens test chart 6-feet from camera sensor, and then set the shim pack to get my recently services 9.5mm Zeiss Super Speed to to correctly focus at 6-feet (when focus was sharp, and witness Mark shows 6-feet. At this point, tried my Angie zoom, and the lens was not parfocal, back focus is off. The shims set for the Ziess 9.5 wound up being .0055-inch (.004 + .0015). Then played with the shims in the adapter until back focus was correct, which wound up being .0045-inch total shim (.004+.0005-inch), the.
The Angie would hold focus from wide to tele correctly (parfocal). The difference being .001-inch, which is the amount the PL adapter is off or the lens is not correctly collimated, not sure which. I know the 9.5mm Zeiss is correct, just got it back from Duclos. The more I,think about this, the more likely the Angie PL mount needs to be shimmed back into proper FFD, and is off approximately 0.001-inch.
Cheers.

4.6k Shipments

Well that makes sense when you were referring to the FFD. I thought at first you meant the witness mark at some distance was off 0.001" which I would not know how to measure, but the FFD off 0.001" is serious all right. I bought the BMD shim set, but haven't needed to use it yet, but one day I may find I have to crack it open. Hope there is a 0.001 in there!

There should be. Shimming the PL adapter is a real pain, too. I am about ready to put it back to correct FFD for the Super Speeds, and let Dulcos shim the Angie mount to match the Super Speeds. Meanwhile, I found a MFT/PL adapter that has a helical back focus adjustment, and use that for the Angie zoom.
