MacDrive problems on PC

PostMon Feb 04, 2013 8:23 am

MacDrive (latest version) sabotaged my PC. Merely having it installed caused Windows Explorer to crash every time I tried to format an SSD using Windows Explorer. This was driving me nuts. It happened both with the SSD in a USB 3-connected dock and with a Thunderbolt-connected GoFlex. Once MacDrive was uninstalled, no more problems (yay!). Note: I could access files on an SSD via MacDrive (e.g. from Resolve, Photoshop, Windows Explorer), I just could not format from Explorer. And this was true even AFTER the SSD was no longer Mac formatted. MacDrive inserts itself in the access path for any access to any drive.

So my advice is, now that ExFAT is available: if you have any MacDrive-formatted (HFS+ format = Apple) SSD's, keep MacDrive long enough to copy off the contents and delete the partition on each SSD (you need to use MacDrive to delete the HFS+ partition). Then use Windows Explorer (you must have Windows 7) to reformat each SSD to NTFS, then reformat to ExFAT. With ExFAT you are home free. Then uninstall MacDrive. And let the door smack it in the rear on the way out.

If you never got MacDrive, count your blessings. I have had no problems with ExFAT, both on my Hyperdeck shuttle and with the BMCC.

You have to "unMacDrive" each drive you formatted with it - it's hidden somewhere in the options.

And yeah, I said it here and on other forums several times. I can do funky things to your system.
Thanks god and Perry for exFat - makes the life of us PC folks so much easier.
