DNxHD codec trouble

PostThu Aug 25, 2016 5:04 pm

I have a colleague who is trying to integrate Fusion into his workflow. He's running AVID on a Mac and, obviously, has the DNxHD codec installed. Trouble is... he can't open DNxHD QTs in Fusion 8.2 beta. I suggested he also install DaVinci Resolve 12 - which he did and, of course, plays DNxHD QTs just fine!

We're scratching our heads... how could Fusion be the only program that can't open this format?

All ideas appreciated - thanks, Mark TS

could try installing the codecs again....

Not sure avids playback system, but adobe and davinci (as of 12 ish) dont need quicktime to playback quicktime....they have their own proprietary playback components....AVID is this way as well I suspect for DNXHD except i'm not sure about AMA.

Fusion still uses old quicktime AFAIK for quicktime playback....so decoding in one doesn't necessarily mean the other can access the same codec through the same system

Nope. On Mac, installing the codec won't help.
You have to use other formats which Fusion can read.
Alternatively, use Fusion Connect (it should work well if you have the Studio license OR if you have Blackmagic video monitoring device/Avid DNxIO box).

Thanks for the tips. I just looked at his list of QT output options and there are only 3 flavours of codecs - where if he selects QT output in the AVID software he's got about 30 codecs. It looks as if the Mac version, free that is, is not fully functional.

Maybe someone from Blackmagic could confirm this and possibly let us know if there are plans to widen the codec field.

Even the Studio version has only ProRes or Uncompressed.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
