Devouring disk space

PostSat Sep 10, 2016 2:43 am

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and new to Resolve. Adobe forced my hand when they eliminated Speedgrade, and I find resolve a massive upgrade. But things are not real smooth yet after color correction. My current problem involves a wedding video that is about 54 minutes long. When I render, I eventually get the message Failed to encode the video frame. I realized this was because my hard drive was full, and so I started dumping data onto an external drive. The internal is a 2 TB drive and after several tries I had moved almost half the storage off. And still, when I went to render the project it would fill the drive right back up again. Finally I settled for rendering just the last third of the film, and this did conclude successfully, but it practically filled the drive back up. I did remove all the old xml files each time I retried a render (and dumped more files), but I'm astounded that rendering a one-hour project could produce over a TB of data. Now, I've got the third of the movie back in Premiere, and Premiere is running so choppy that I can't sync it to sound. That's where I'm at.

I'm working on a home-built computer, with an Intel core 4770k processor, 3.5 ghz. 16 GB Ram. Windows 7 pro. And a Nvidia 700 series GPU. The video was shot in 4K on a Panasonic GH4. I would have no problem downscaling, if that's part of the problem, but I'd rather not do the work of color correcting again, obviously, and I do eventually want to do some projects in 4k.

I look forward to getting this round trip business down (I did have luck with a smaller project). Resolve is amazing.

Many thanks,

Doug

Your problem sounds like hardware Config is not sufficient. Please review the config guide on the Bmd support page. You will need a newer and faster GPU and W10 .

What format are you trying to render out to?

Sounds like you are trying to render to uncompressed which means you need around 622MB/s without the audio for 8 bit uncompressed UHD@25fps which is why you are running out of space. This would also explain why the play back is choppy as your drives aren't fast enough to play back at that speed

I just clicked the Premiere render setting, which defaults to 10 bit uncompressed. I'm also getting audio with the video (though the audio has problems, hence the syncing).

Thanks for the tip on hardware. I will research that.

Love this program, but the issues never stop. I just bought a 1TB SSD that is solely for Resolve cache and optimized media. While I do edit 4k videos my total project media is usually around 80 gigs. However, upon optimizing at 1/2 res I'm somehow filling up my drive. Moreover, even after deleting cache and Omedia resolve is still using hundreds of gigs on my drive. Any ideas?

Also, it seems like the more space available on the drive the more the program consumes, this could be pure imagination, but my old Resolve SSD, a mere 256GB, would hover around 6-10gbs of free space, and I find it curious that my new 1TB is hovering around the same even though my workflow and projects are nearly identical.

I have reinstalled to no avail.

Check your format(s). Even optimized media can be set to uncompressed and eat tons of disk space that way.
It's under "Master Settings". Use a good intermediate format, like DNxHR.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
