How to slow down playback speed while editing ?

PostWed Nov 02, 2016 3:22 pm

Hello all,

I am new to using Resolve. I have been able to grasp the general use of the software by searching a little, and I always found an answer quickly in a youtube tutorial or in a forum post from here.

There is still something that I can't find: how to slow down playback speed, or move frame by frame, so that I can cut at the exact right time. There is so many things about "slow playback" that are performance problems that I don't find where my issue is addressed.

Mind you, perhaps it is just that I am not used to this type of software. It probably is something so evident that I don't see it ?

My name is Guy, and I am from France. I use the software to create a video of my rock band that I could publish on the internet.

Thank you all for your help.

Hello Guy,

Under the Edit tab in Resolve, when you highlight your footage and right click, go to the option for Retime contol and from here, you can adjust your playback speed.

For more info and step by step tutorials, the Resolve manual (page 552) has a lot of great information. You can also do a search on YouTube and other online resources for "Resolve 12.5 Retime".

Hi Guy, welcome.

Are you looking for a similar function (I think avid) where if you press at the same time [K+L] you get something like 8fps?

You can step frame by frame using the arrow keys, and if you hold them down it will continue stepping at the key repeat rate.

You can change the playback rate of the project in the project settings if you want consistently play at a lower frame rate than the timeline, but then you would need to go and change it again when you want to play back in real-time.

No, not what the OP is asking for.

There are some NLEs that allow for a more intuitive scrub or reduced framerate-on-preview through the JKL keys. Holding down the "K" key, while selecting either the "J" or "L" will alternatively preview the media at some (usually pre-determined) speed with pitch-compensated audio. Its a good way to edit dialogue and would be useful for music.

I don't think its implemented in Resolve. Yet?

That's a very good feature to have, and I wish Resolve had it.

Resolve has had this for a while now, maybe since v11. Can't remember.

I've never used it but yeah it's there. I don't know if it's possible to set the speed but I think it runs at half speed.

Thank you all very much for the kind answers.

The K+J||L does exactly what I wanted.

I understand that the question has been answered, but I think it is worth mentioning that the jog control gadget <o> on the viewer provides good variable speed control down to frame-at-a-time stepping. That can be helpful for locating precise edit points.

Is there or will there be a keyboard shortcut to <o>? I would love to map this to my Shuttle pro as "arrow left"and "arrow right" for jog is very clunky.

To anyone having this problem still. In the tab "playback" (top left of screen) there is an option "play slow". I use version 17.3.
