ATEM TVS serious bug: becomes unresponsive over network

PostFri Feb 15, 2013 11:17 pm

There is a bug that ATEM Television studio becomes unresponsive after a large number of connect retries. This primarily happens with clients connected via lossy (WIFI) networks when ATEM Software Control returns to the configuration dialog due to a loss of connectivity. When you manually reconnect to the ATEM switcher by pressing OK this works only for a short time. This also could happen simply after a while restarting the Control Software every day from multiple clients.
After that the ATEM Television studio no longer answers over the network and thus no client gets connected to it. This even happens with clients connected via Ethernet. After ATEM has been power cycled all clients can connect properly again. There is no other solution than this which causes an outage of signals. I really would appreciate if this problem could be fixed soon.

It's no doubt related to the maximum 5 clients which can be connected to the ATEM TVS & 1ME (2ME allows for 7).

I agree... it's a bit of a problem if you have a poor/unstable connection to the ATEM. It would be useful if there was some "back-door" method to reset all the active clients.

I've not experienced any issue personally on many days-long events - but then I don't connect via wifi - or usually have more than three active clients controlling the ATEM.

Hi Deti,

When you experience unresponsive to the Television Studio via the software GUI, are you able to ping the ATEM over the network at all? To do this, open a terminal or command prompt session and type the following command the hit enter:
ping ATEM_IP

Does the connection timeout or is the network finding the ATEM?

We can investigate this further on our end to determine what might be going on.

Hi Sarah,

the ATEM can be pinged and it answers the Hello Command, but it does not deliver its operating state information as usual (Client 172.16.2.174 / ATEM 172.16.2.222):

09:29:53.487840 IP 172.16.2.174.53910 > 172.16.2.222.9910: UDP, length 20

0x0010: ac10 02de d296 26b6 001c 84cf 1014 1289 ......&.........
0x0020: 0000 0000 0050 0000 0100 0000 0000 0000 .....P..........
09:29:53.688940 IP 172.16.2.174.53910 > 172.16.2.222.9910: UDP, length 20
0x0000: 4500 0030 caf5 0000 4011 521b ac10 02ae E..0....@.R.....

0x0020: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0100 0000 0000 0000 ................

After a timeout when waiting for the missing data the ATEM Software Control shows its configuration dialog.

The test above needed only 30-40 restarts of the client software.

I can aproof this issue.
Had the same with Atem TVS 3.3, Win7 Clients through ethernet.
After a couple of connectivity losses, no more reconnect is possible till the ATEM is restartet.

cheers

Has there been any improvement on this?
I experience the same with 3.4 and the ATEM TVS. It seems so far to work ok over the wire, but wireless causes the above problem. My network only contains the ATEM TVS, currently one Macbook on a wire and one Macbook wireless with a normal WIFI router.

You mean the slider in lower left corner? This is the fader. It works correctly when using the latest ATEM 3.5 software (firmware 2.7).

FabienCondeTV wrote:It is possible (or it will be possible for the future) to switch cameras directly from the program.

For now do a long press on the button. In future versions you will have to switch the mode explicitly.

FabienCondeTV wrote:Did you planned to get the other tab (Audio mixing, Media) ?

Well this all is on my list. I will add much more functions like switching US/DS-Keys, transition mode and audio mixing.

The next version will include support for ATEM 2 M/E which will result in a second mixer tab. All buttons will can be assigned a source (or macro) freely. Further the ATEM protocol stack will be optimized to reduce the possibility of unresponsive ATEMs as much as possible.

The near future will add LUA scripting and AMCP protocol support for CasparCG.

I am really surprised that METAControl has become so popurlar within only 3 days. It has been downloaded hundreds of times and this really makes me happy.

thank you very much for your great explanation and big hope for the next release.
The slider bar doesn't work so only because i didn't upgraded the firmware ( i will do it then).
Just one word: "Amazing" !
From now with this version i am 100% satisfied and i'm lucky to run it today...it is for free..so no complain possible :)
All the best to you and to your team..please keep us updated or tell us where to get your last infos
Thanksssss so much

I have the same problem... ethernet loses connectivity.. no flashing leds when looking at the ethernet connector. It takes many power cycles to resolve the issue, then it may quit at any time. I am controlling from a mac mini via 1 cisco switch... or thru cradlepoint wifi router with an iPhone app via wifi (just using the 4 port switch on the cradlepoint). I have swapped cables, switches, it all points to ethernet on the ATEM studio.

I too, have this issue mostly on our 1ME, but have experienced on the TVS as well. Last week during a show it completely locked us out...could no longer cut cameras, and had to deal with it as we had aux bus running screens... wireless router, however i am wired, and all static ip's. We use both software and brodcast panel....

This just happened to me. I have 2 windows computers communicating over a switch to the ATEM 2me 4K. I keep it running over night and when I come in the next morning the ATEM switcher does talk with the computers.

Here is all my IP info:
Switcher:
Address: 192.168.2.7
Mask: 255.255.252.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.100

Computer 1 and 2 share the same mask and gateway.

I'm running with the newest software and firmware from Black Magic Design. Any ideas would be helpful especially if someone knows if an update it coming.
