Rays not working..open cl not found

PostTue Jul 11, 2017 2:03 am

Hi there, just installed free version of fusion 8 yesterday on a quite new system on
asus Rog G20cb 1080 gtx nvidia card 32 gb ram
Windows 10 home, with installed game drivers

Now the rays node doesn´t seem to work, it yields a red mark on the console and within that I got this..
OpenCL Could not find valid context: CL_DEVICE_NOT_FOUND
Rays1 failed at time 0
Rays1 failed at time 0
Rays1 failed at time 0
Rays1 failed at time 0
Rays1 failed at time 0
Rays1 failed at time 0
Rays1 failed at time 0

Maybe windows and nvidia hasn´t installed opencl properly, thought that should have been done automaticly when installing those drivers and updating windows?

In "Preferences", have you set up Fusion to use the GPU OpenCL?

I have looked everywhere in the preferences, I can not find any settings to adjust that or anything mentioning openCL or gpu...so where is it.

You have to have the Studio version to do that.

Well..that´s no god, leaves me without the option to use rays...which I think you shouldn´t have to go for the studio version for..but it is what it is.

Might use another solution and use shapes and blurring if I can get that to work the same as with after effects cs3, or maybe return to after effects for that stuff.

But it´s a bit confusing, does this mean the free fusion version do not take use of cuda cards properly with gpu processing, or is it just the openCL specific tools like rays and perhaps a few others(wonder how many others?)

It's confusing.

The free version lets you use OpenCL tools, even lets you write your own. What it doesn't let you do it choose which device runs the OpenCL code.

Personally, I think the free version should either lose the OpenCL tool paths entirely or should allow you to choose your OpenCL device so you can troubleshoot things like this.

Thanks chad..

Does´t look good when a tool such as lightrays so often commenly used is excluded from free users, I mean it´s almost a default tool.

I thought maybe a workaround and use some type of blur, similar to what videocopilot uses for lightrays and using after effects cc radial fast blur, which I often used with after effects, but checking around in fusion I can not find a similar blur tool in there, not in this free version.

Personally, I don't think even Studio users should have the Rays tool installed by default. It's a tool with no non-OpenCL fallback code. All the other tools that were OpenCL-only in prior versions of Fusion were removed entirely or moved to a separate install folder so they don't load by default.

Maybe we talk different things here, but the rays tool can work with the free version.
Can you check if you have settings for "OpenCL" in the global preferences?
I once lost all OpenCL options when I updated the graphics card driver. I had to reinstall the driver and everything worked again

I think there is only on Rays tool here...but yes, thanks for confirming that it can work with the free version, I fellow over at newtek forums for lightwave users said he tested it and it works.

But..I do not have and settings for OpneCL in the global preferences, so it may possible that it is a question of fusion not able to recognize the settings due to newer drivers ..not sure where to go, install what drivers for what?

the information on my drivers for nvidia gtx 1080 is ..driver version..
21.21.13.7563
and with detailed information it shows open cl file version 1.2.11.0

those threads are not helping much since I simply do not have any open cl setting to control in the preferences.

so it´s total confuse, some say they use free version and can acess open cl, and some say you have to have the studio version to acess open cl in the preference settings

Hmmm... I don't have the free version, and BMD prevents me from testing it, so I can't verify whether the free version is missing the option or whether there is a system-specific fault that is causing OpenCL to not be available. Not without enabling debugging and writing a Fuse specifically to test it.

How does BMD prevent you from testing it? If it has to do with the installation overwriting (which is bad) you could probably work around it by renaming your Studio directory (or completely copying it over to another place), installing the Free Version - renaming that to whatever you like and then put Studio back into it's original directory. As far as I know, Fusion will still run from whatver directory it sits in, just like it used to do in the pre-BMD days. You just have to make sure the installer doesn't overwrite what you want to keep.

Rays and other OpenCL tools work with the free version!
you just cant change the OpenCL device in the preferences in the free version

this is what you should see in the preferences for th OpenCL settings:

So it is or isn't an issue, then? It looks like you can select a device.

You surely can select the OpenCL device in Fusion 8 in the free version.

In Fusion 7 you couldn't do this in the free version, just in the paid one.

Let me quote myself in one of the mentioned threads above:

I had a similar issue some time ago:

The OpenCL Rays was not working on my Tahiti board (faster but older), just on with my Bonnaire (slower but newer) or when I used the CPU.

I thought that this was due to the OpenCL version (the Tahiti is 1.2 and the Bonnaire is 2.0).

But this was not the case. When I reinstalled the drivers after running an AMD utility called "AMDCleanupUtility.exe", the issue was fixed.

Maybe Nvidia has a similar tool that cleans the registry and the OpenCL cache. Or, alternatively, you can uninstall the drivers and run a utility like CCleaner to cleanup the registry.

that isn´t an issue for him, it´s an issue for me the thread starter, since I do not even have any open cl tab in the preferences settings.

Well as said..I do not see it, so there must be something wrong with not having the proper drivers installed maybe, or maybe a simple reboot of the machine may work as well since I haven´t done that after installing fusion 8.

the only drivers installed manually was when I accepted the nvidia experience game ready drivers, if you could call that manually :)

so I will boot the computer and check fist, next thing would be to check for open cl drivers, I am not keen on re-installing nvidia drivers..don´t that really take care of itself nowadays?

And yes..other guys on for instance some lightwave forums have tested it in the free version..so it should work.
will probably not reboot until tomorrow though.
Thanks for trying to help out here.

Finally I have it working, and you know what, It seems the nvidia game ready driver was from october 2016, it´s weird, I thought I had run an update on it to get the latest when I installed the nvidia experience..but obviously not.

So thank you for having patience and trying to help me solve it.

as for what you said michael, yes it helped to install the correct one :) but a sidenote, you said that if the graphic drivers wouldn´t help, try install intell opencl drivers, curious, do they support that on the side with different drivers as to those that actually comes with nvidia game gtx drivers, since that is bundled within the nvidia drivers?

So anyway it is working now, I checked preferences and open cl options is there, though I didn´t make any changes and just shut that down as is, and added the rays tool, and voila..nicely working, good speed too compared to after effects cs lightrays, though I abonded that in after effects for using the trick I posted with just cc fast radial blur in after effects.

Now I need a similar tool for lightning effects that resides in after effects.

Thank you for the help all fellows.
