Power On Button

I was doing a shoot over this past weekend and me moved to a different location and my BMCC turned on in the bag. It heated up and got so hot because the fan was facing the bottom of the bag. The camera was so hot when I picked it up I had to put it back down. Fortunately the camera and the footage still worked. But I cant believe this is good for the camera. Has anyone else ran into this problem and if you did how did you deal with it.

I was a post on this a few weeks back, I believe the recommendation was to keep the area around the button unobstructed. There was talk about making a case where that wouldn't happen but I think it's still early for specialized cases.

I started a post on that subject. Putting the camera upside down seems to help a lot as I wont touch the wall on the way in. I am now keeping it in my Shape rig all the time and nothing can touch the buttons now.

I have a Pelican hard case and I pick and plucked the foam so it goes in there upside down. Not only does this suit the wedge shape of the camera, but the fan, power button and the power cable are all near the bottom. It seems like a no-brainer to me to put it in that way.

Hopefully BMD will consider adding a new power-on safety feature in a future BMCC firmware. For example, maybe BMD can change the power-on functionality so you have to press & hold both the Stop and Power buttons for 2 seconds to turn on the camera.

Meanwhile, maybe this issue is another good reason for buying the BMCC version of the GRID LCD loupe? Just a thought ...

As shown in the attached photo, the GRID loupe's magnetic frame protrudes a bit from the back of the BMCC.

If you cut a piece of thin, flat, steel approx. the size & shape of the back of the BMCC, it can be temporarily affixed to the GRID's magnetic frame, such as while packed for transit. The steel will both protect the LCD and prevent the power button from being pressed accidentally.

Yes, this happen to me exactly as you described. Put it in my case off, then it turned on and it heated up. It still doenst power all the way down sometimes, so i wait a few second when i power it off to make sure it stays off. Hopefully this is a firmware issue and will be resolved.

And Like I posted in a previous post, There needs to be a BMD or third party cover that snaps on like the Hood that comes with the BMCC, Think about the HOOD???

Okay now think about a HOOD that snaps on but is a LCD screen cover that is large enough to cover the screen and the menu buttons..Now you get it??!!

Damn simple yet effective design to cover and protect the screen and cover the buttons.

If I need to draw you a Diagram I may as well get a Patent License and sell it for 15 times the manufacturing cost like everything else made for low budget Film makers.

No need for any firmware updates, Just a simple OME (original manufacturer equipment) LCD Cover will do just fine.

I think a button combo would be a nice simple way to address this but I would buy a cover if one was available. Would be good to have a way to protect the LCD when not in uses. I even considered cannibalising the hood that comes with the camera to make a cover. Would be easy to use the same clipping method.

I like your LCD & button protective cover idea, too.

A power-on button interlock implemented in firmware from BMD would also be welcome.

I suggested utilizing the GRID loupe magnetic frame as a more immediate solution for end users.

Your buttons aren't hitting anything on the way into a bag etc. Your camera just isn't powering off when you turn it off.

Before you put the camera in a bag, right after you turn it off, wait three to five seconds to make sure that the camera is off. You'd be surprised how many times it turns right back on.

IF you're putting it in a bag with a power supply connected, disconnect the power supply. In fact, IMO, ALWAYS disconnect the power supply from your camera when you're moving to a different location or done for the day as a precaution.

I haven't figured out if it's the cables that we're using or if it's the camera talking to the lens even after shut off, or there's some sort of soft reset but I am willing to wager cash that you aren't accidentally turning it on, it's just powering itself back on after you turn it off.

The button takes quite a decent press to turn it on.

I definitely found that sliding the camera in right side up can and will turn the camera on. I switched the padding configuration to allow me to stuff the camera in while still in the shape rig. Makes me also worry less about the camera getting crushed. Bag is LowePro Roller Lite which I really like as I travel fairly often.

If you release the button as soon as the screen powers off it shuts down. If you hold it a little longer and then release it, the camera reboots.

Doesn't happen when I do that. I tried it a few days ago during prep, if the camera's cold it turns off no matter how long you hold the button, if it's warm it decides when it wants to stay off.

That is weird. I just tried mine. Cold out of the bag.

Quick press an it started up.

Hold it in and it shuts down. If i release the button when the screen shuts off it stays off. If I release it a little after then it reboots. I can repeat it over and over and get the same result. I'll try it once it is warm on location tomorrow.

+1 Kholi. Same exact thing. I had the camera on for hours at a time and getting it to shut down hot was hit and miss.

I'm having the phantom power issues myself only mine are worse. When I opened the box the camera came in, the camera was on and at 15% battery inside the shrink-wrapped box. Three different times now the camera has turned on while it was simply on my desk and I was on the other side of the room. I've also found the camera to turn on for no reason at all when I'm taking it out of the pelican case. I have the pick/pluck foam and I have about a half inch of extra depth so the buttons aren't pressed by the top of the case when it's closed. If I pull the camera out by the SIDES of the camera only without pressing buttons, sometimes the camera will turn on. This is after its been off for 2 days.
