zeiss ze's or leica r's ??

Hey guys, I already own a 28mm zeiss ze and an 85mm ze. I love them both. I was going to complete my ze's with a couple more to make a complete set but after seeing John Brawley's "BMC on Puberty Blues" shot using the leica 35mm f2 R and 50mm R Im kind of considering purchasing both of those. What do you guys think? Also it would be nice if you would jump in Mr. Brawley

When doing some research on lenses, I discovered the a lot of the Monolta SLR lenses are the same as the Leica R family due to a partnership between Leica and Minolta.

Go with the Leica Rs and never go back. I know I wont.

My fan boyism aside, here are some of the best reasons why.

1. There are so many ways to use this lens. They're FULL manual control unlike the Zeiss ZEs, which means they can be used on a variety of cameras, not just digital, without the need for electronic iris control. Have them boys at Duclos declick it, and you have buttery smooth iris control.

2. The ZEISS ZF mounts are full manual control, but then you have to contend with the opposite focus direction of Nikon based lenses. Which can be a deal breaker to some. People with a FF with a reversible gear, not so much.

3. They have AMAZING range of focus throw. For your sake and/or your focus pullers this is the biggest deal breaker for me. Some Leica R's have nearly 340 degrees of throw WITH hardstops. Zeiss ZE/ZFs have great throw too (and the hard stop) just not as much. Point in fact, for cinematic purposes the MORE, the better.

4. They resolve beautifully on the big screen, Mr. Hurlbut thinks so too, and they really do have that Panny Primo vibe.

5. eBay/2nd hand hunt, and they can be found for downright bargains.

6. A Leica R prime set (and a 70-180mm APO if I ever get lucky) with the metabones speed booster on an MFT BMCC will be a giant slayer.

Thanks man...this helps a lot...currently eyeing a 35mm R f2 and 50mm f2 R....now I just need something wider than my 28mm zeiss ze...any advice on that?

Well, that's really budget driven. (I'm assuming this is for the EF mount BMCC) Since the BMCC's flange issue has been fixed, the Tokina 11-16 is gonna be your best first bet.

If you can wait 4 months and got 3.5grand to spare, the Duclos Tokina 11-16. Hot, hot, hot.

yea I know a lot about the tokina 11-16mm...I use to own one back when I was shooting w/ the 7d then switched to the 5d mk3....and yes it will be for the BMCC EF. And no I don't have 3.5 grand to spare but I sure wish I did as the duclos would be awesome ...if I purchase the 35 and 50mm R's I will definitely have duclos cine mod them though.
