Audio/Shotgun Mic troubles with BMCC

PostThu Mar 28, 2013 12:49 am

I am having difficulty getting my Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic to work with my BMCC. I have it connected via XLR to minijack with adapter to fit audio input on BMCC. When I have my headphones on I hear the internal mic working, then as soon as I plug in my Rode into Audio input 1 or 2, the sound stops and I have nothing at all. Any ideas? Everything is like new and the mic works alone connected to my Tascam DR-680. I want the shotgun as a back up audio to my lavs and Tascam external recorder. Thanks in advance.

If your mike requires phantom power it will not work. If not phantom power is required replace your battery and try again.

You may have to switch it from "line" and "mic" level. The NTG2 is non phantom power mic so should be fine to use with the BMCC.

Thanks. I tried that, nothing. I have changed battery 3x and still as soon as I plug in mic to audio, I get nothing. I really can't understand what is going on....

I guess your cable is not wired the right way.

Straight from Mic to audio input? What could be wrong with that? Seriously, this is really odd. Thanks for the input.

Is your cable XLR to balanced TRS jack (3 rings like a stereo headphone connector) or mono jack? The BMCC inputs are balanced, I believe.

The first thing I would do is try that mic/cable combo on a different camera to make sure it's working.. if it does.. then move to the adapter.. (those things fail all the time)
if you can confirm your mic/cable/adapter is working properly on anther camera.. then set it all up on you BMCC and make sure the internal mic is off.. then the input is set to mic.. and the headset volume is turned up as well.. try both channels.. if it doesn't work.. try different mics on the camera as well.. before you send the camera back make sure the adapter is working.. (again.. those things fail)

THANK YOU!!! Yes, tried a new cable that was a balanced TRS and it works now. Also, the adapter was suspect as well. Thank you all!
