Subtitles bug and ideas in 15

PostTue Apr 24, 2018 8:23 am

Ok, the subtitles feature is pretty great but there is a bug and some refinements needed to be made...

First off the bug - When you change the magnification of the edit timeline, the alignment of the subtitles goes awry. In larger, more zoomed out states, the subtitle clips align just fine with the video clips beneath. However if you start to zoom in, they lose their alignment on the screen (See pic).

Second, a few refinements:

1) A larger / enlargeable text box to type the subtitles into, in the Inspector.
2) Add definable left and right margin settings so you can determine how wide the subtitles can go across the video frame.
3) Add hyphenation, word splitting feature. Typing in words into the subtitle text area, occasionally odd single characters just get pushed into lines below, rather than keeping the characters of whole words together. It would be good to have a tick box on/off hyphenation feature,
4) Add spell checking. Ideally dialled into the existing (Mac/PC's own OS) spell checking system.
5) Also when creating compound clips, subtitles get included with the audio and video clips. It just makes editing in foreign languages so much easier to have a 'soft' burnt-in series of subtitles to use - which you can then later Decompose in Place to make changes / edits / prepare for delivery.

There you go. Keep up the great work. Loving this software.

Just a short update.

I've noticed that the bug only happens when using keyboard shortcuts (CMD + '+', or CMD + '-') keys. If you use the magnification slider on the top of the edit timeline, the subtitles will align correctly at different magnifications).

That said, it's still a bug that needs to be fixed.

Does this happen every time? How long is your timeline, does it depend on duration at all? Or even where subtitles are relative to each other or how long they are?

I've seen a couple of times that when I zoom in there is misalignment but also if I go previous/next clip then the playhead correctly goes to the right place, even if it's in the middle of a misaligned subtitle - by which I mean that the subtitles are exactly where they should be, it's just a UI glitch suggesting they are not. And then moving the timeline about a bit seems to fix things. Is this the case with you? And what if you start a new project? Might be worth sending the project file or a video or both.

In Project Settings you can define the maximum number of characters per line, not ideal because line width would then be influenced by font size not to mention that some characters are simply wider than others. Margins would be better in that regard, though I am wondering if 'max characters per line' is a requirement for certain distributors, it seems to ring a bell? If that's the case then you're stuck.

That's weird. Hopefully even if they don't add hyphenation then they'll fix this behaviour.

Sounds complicated to implement - what about linking subtitles to their matching video/audio with Alt-Cmd-L? And turning off subtitle track view if you need to?

Just taking a first look at the subtitles feature in Resolve 15 b2 and having some trouble getting Track Style -> Line Spacing to work.

Of course I might just be misunderstanding its purpose... my assumption is that this is the 'leading' control for multi line subtitles? If so, is there a trick for getting it to work? Everything else seems to be working as expected, but the Line Spacing control is having no effect on my multi-line titles whatsoever.

Any ideas?

I hope that they can add font preview effects (including Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese), the current font can not preview very difficult to choose

There's definitely an issue with subtitles losing sync when zooming in/out. They may continue to play correctly, but they'll display in the wrong time position on the track.

It's unclear what steps are required to restore sync. Sync can usually be re-established, but how isn't obvious.

Can you post system specs and if possible a video? Does switching pages or restarting resolve put the subs back where they were?

Hi,

I’ve just noticed that there is an issue with burnt subtitles in ACES using v15b2. There is an outline spreading as if the color space of the subs was not interpreted right.

Also when you render as a separate srt file, you randomly get this pattern /N and if you reimport the srt, all the lines affected will be blank in the new subtitles track.

Another thing, I tried to import an srt from aegisub and the italic tag <i> was not recognized.

What would be great is the ability to export a srt without having to render the whole timeline. Unless I ‘m missing something, my workaround is to render audio only.

Thanks BM for this great new feature. Even not perfect yet, it is already a time saver!

Cheers.

for the italics you will have to go to the subtitle containing the italics and untick the 'Use Track Style' box.

Also, you can render a single frame of the timeline and still get the SRT file exported.

Neither are very satisfactory solutions, for what I hope to BMD are obvious reasons, and hopefully improvements will be made or I'll only be able to do very basic subtitling work in Resolve.

Thanks for the tip of rendering only one frame Tom.
I thought I had tried to untick the track style with no success. Maybe it was in beta1. It works thanks.
I’ve run little test with different tag styles and they all seem to work except the color tag and strangely if you use the underline tag it is enabled even in track style mode and you can’t get rid of it

About subtitling, here are my problems and improvements:

1 - When I use Justify to bottom of safe title, 2 lines of subtitles stuck to the bottom of safe title, but when I have only one line, Resolve add an empty line between subtitle and the safe title, so the sentence is not stuck to the bottom of safe title. So, NEED TO FIX IT ASAP.

2- Need to add a Save and Load preset for my adjustments of stroke, font, drop shadow ( I see that there is a 3 dots in Inspector and maybe this is the button to save and load the preset, but not implemented yet ).

3- When I import SRT file with some italic subtitles, all subtitles are non italic.

For example, when I have a SRT file like this (as seen in Word software):

10:15:48,407 --> 10:15:50,993
<i>there's a pretty little house</i>
<i>in front of the church</i>

Resolve should to put in italic all those 2 sentences. But for now, I have to desactivate manually Use Track Style and ajust by myself the italic.

I used EZ Titles software for 3 years and EZ titles plug-in in Avid Media Composer to finish all subtitles project done in Resolve and I never have problem with italic. EZ titles works like a charm !

4- Need to have a better control for Stroke, add outside adj., opacity and softness.

5- Able to import .SCC file to verify Closed captions file (This option will be good for our Quality Control department).

6- Able to export the .SRT or Webvtt file without the video and audio option. For the moment, when I use Separate file and desactivate Video, automatically the Audio file is enable. So the export is longer and I have a audio file that I don't need at all. I just need the .SRT or Webvtt file.

7- When I export subtitles from a sequence starting at 10h, the .SRT and Webvtt have timings starting à 00. Need to have an option to export a file starting to the t/c start of my sequence.

8- When I import .SRT or Webvtt containing t/c, good to have a way to drop the subtitle file and Resolve put the subtitles automatically in the timeline reflect to the t/c. Faster, precise and more efficient.

Thanks !

I already answered these here viewtopic.php?f=32&t=72630
but you didn't get back to me. 1. is already working but you must be doing it wrong (provide a video if you still doubt me after following the instructions in the link), and no-one needs an SRT that has 10 hour timecode.
