Render ACES DSM from unmanaged DaVinci YRGB session

PostFri Apr 27, 2018 1:18 pm

Hey,
after finishing a grade with unmanaged DaVinci YRGB, is it possible to have this converted to an ACES DSM?
Like adding a Color Space Transform to AP1 ACEScct.
Thanks.

Maybe just render it out and then import it back into a fresh, blank ACES color managed project, and set the color space?

I'm pretty sure this is not the best option.
The unnecessary render will destroy most of the color fidelity which i want to have in the ACES DSM.

unfortunately, ACES, either you're in, our you're out.

Render to exr then import is a way.

Resolve does not allow (AFAIK) the kind of workflow you're describing, regardless, if you color in whatever state you are abs you export, you get what you saw. If you then go into aces the export, you might not get what you saw.

@Paul:
very interesting. I will have a look at it.

@Walter:
Thank you for your input.
In my not colour managed session - i do know which color it is.
Shouldn't Color Space Transform node do the right things for my purpose if i set Input to my conditions?
Leaving the first render away.
Shouldn't reversing the ODT, RRT, LMT do the same like converting Primaries and Gamma.
Basically this is what i expect from this node.

To get the same (or similar within limits) output from ACES project you need a transform that reverses the RRT + ODT part. Simply selecting an IDT based on your current timeline won't give you same image because RRT is applied and it is not just gamut+gamma transform but more elaborate picture rendering which is not 100% reversible (although I believe in future ACES versions it will be). I'm not Resolve specialist so don't take my word on it, but AFAIK there are (by default) no transforms for reversing the RRT.

In Nuke for example, if you apply one of the Output group transforms (rec709 D65 etc) to your non-colormanaged footage as IDT, it will come out through RRT+ODT looking the same (or almost the same) if you choose the same rec709 ODT. It works because the Output transforms are already concatenated RRT+ODT and applying it as IDT and then applying it again is basically a no-op.
I do stuff

errrr.... what?
render a yrgb timeline -to- EXR
link to the EXR's in an ACES project
set IDT to 709
you will not lose anything

Hi Paul,

I installed the OFX "ACESPlugin.ofx.bundle" but nothing in the tab Color TAB.
Something special to do compared to other OFX with V15B2?

Thank you

It’s CUDA only, but other than that there shouldn’t be an issue. Have you tried compiling it with the source files?

Ok Paul, I compiled in release directly on my system and now the OFX is present.

No explanation why it did not work with your compilation. :)
