5 basic questions for you beta testers...

PostWed May 02, 2018 2:50 pm

Hey,
No chance for me to install a beta version (of anything) on my main computer at this point, because of a couple of ongoing projects (and thus no time to test on another boot drive).
So I decided to ask - directly here - some questions I'm wondering about, specifically about a few new options of Resolve 15 :

1/ did you try the Super Scale option, allowing to enter a S.S. number within the clip attributes ?
Not that the auto "retime and scaling" connected to the project settings doesn't work well, but I've heard it's definitely efficient and it may help in a the project I schedule around September, which includes 40% of SD footage to edit
So, feelings on it ?

2/ What about subtitles/captions ?
I'm really looking forward to using this asap (great way not to use a third party app)

3/ Can you now see the look of the font you choose or still not ? Maybe in Text+ ?

4/ Anyone making multicam around ? Changes in R15 so far ?

5/ As I cancel my question about the LUT browser to see it myself Do you think it's still risky to try beta 2 or 3 on a basic project (a few edits and titling) with no remorse and feelings of suicide ? :D

Beta 2 seems to be considerably more stable for me than the first release, but it's still quite early in the game—there may still be additional critical bugs that haven't been discovered. Also, since the beta will overwrite your v14 installation (back up your database first!!), you don't really have the option of using it for just one project unless you can get that one done completely before returning to your other work. Or you could install an additional OS partition to sandbox the two versions.

At least one user has used v15 for a delivered project and been quite happy with it, so it's certainly capable. I'm just not sure I'd hang an entire business on it quite yet.

The only question I can answer is 4. I'm currently cutting a two-cam school play shot on the Pocket in RAW. Working fine so far. Not seeing any real difference in 15, though.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Since I've had no problems with Betas in the past from v12 on, I installed 15 and upgraded my DB, so no going back.

Bad news is 15 b02 crashes every 3 to 5 minutes. A simple 6-minute cut that should have taken me a few hours to complete ended up taking 12 hours as I was losing grades, added text and cuts during the crashes, and then the time to force quit DVR and restart.

I think the new features look great -- I think the Fairlight features are terrific -- but if your system crashes like mine did, this isn't ready for prime time. I'm stuck with it for past projects (database) but going back to 14 for anything new until they get this fixed. My system: 2013 MacPro, AMD 500, LG OLED display, Akitio raid.

i have mutiple machines, have 14.3 and 15.b2 side by side on four of them, 15.b2 only on one, 14.3 only on one

i've delivered a 1hr tv episodic last week from a machine with both and with no drama what . so . ever

this week i'm primarily working on Baselight, but next week i'm back on a feature in Resolve and we are conforming it on both 14.3 and 15.b2, plan to grade it in 15.b2 without much concern

no drama, some sub-optimal stuff, but no show stoppers, i'd use it for a low stress project like the tv series i did last week, it's season 2, and i've a bucket load of these under my belt already, and work un-supervised

no reason to not keep both alive s far as i can see, but i have fallback positions up the wazooo, so it's easy for me to take a risk when the fallback position is so easly avb.. hence conforming in 14.3 and 15 side by side

Ok guys, thx a lot, I appreciate (a lot)...
So the global feeling I had that it was going to be ok soon ("not prime time but no show stopper" as you guys wrote) is confirmed, and it's high time for me to dive in it maybe around the end of May, for low stress projects too in the beginning.
Now, a last question : is there any kind of announced roadmap about forthcoming betas ?
I'm only aware about a final release in Q3

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Could you please post logs? We don’t have reports of such major instability afaik. Make sure you are on latest macOS 10.13 update and please use Metal.

That machine is starting to be far too underpowered for Resolve. Just for kicks I have an aging mid-2012 MBP in which I am running Resolve 15 but only to occasionally check footage, or try something that I read online and not for actual grading. If I was working on a film, and needed to edit in Resolve on my MBP, I would create 720p ProRes LT proxies to work offline with since even HD gives my MBP a hard time.

My main system is Hackintosh-based and about to get upgraded to yet an even faster CPU/GPU combo.

I would recommend upgrading to an iMac Pro, or if you need portability wait until Apple Dev Conference where supposedly new MBP with 6-core CPU's will be announced.

EDIT - Sorry I misread Mac Book Pro rather than Mac Pro. My bad. Your system is fine.

Hi SAM,

V15B2 is good (some cache problem) but if you can wait for a future version, it will only be better I hope and more about Fusion TAB. Now apart from Fusion (not complete), everything else seems solid.

For Fusion, there is always the VFX connect Clip, since you have a License for Fusion;) and MOCHA...

Many new interesting features.
- ADR?
- FairLightFX ?
- NEW OFX?

Do your backups regularly...

It sounds like his system is running fine. He's not complaining of performance issues. He's bringing up that 15 is crashing on him a lot whereas 14.3 wasn't. Very different issue than performance. A 2013 Mac Pro is probably fine depending on the media he's working with. iMac Pro isn't a good solution for a lot of people, such as if you want multiple screens or have already invested in high quality monitors, or if you need/want more expandability. A lot of people are holding out for the new Mac Pro or considering switching to PC.

6-core MacBook Pros won't be announced next month. The 6-core is more of a rumor and would at first be only in a desktop chip solution and not immediately available for a mobile platform, which Apple will only use due to power requirements. Also, LPDDR4 RAM is still not supported in the current and forthcoming mobile chipsets, so 32GB RAM won't be supported until the end of the year or most likely next year. Apple will take a lot of heat if they release a 6-core MBP without an option for 32GB RAM. So, don't hold your breath for a 6-core MBP until at least next year. And even if 6-core mobile CPUs were available that soon, I don't think with the latest rumors of Apple switching to their own CPUs or to AMD, that Intel would be willing to give Apple first use of those 6-core CPUs. Either, not happening next month and probably not happening this year. End of this year would be the earliest.

Underpowered CPU's are more crash prone. He might have been skating just below the crash threshold with 14, and now 15 has pushed his machine a bit too far.

I can tell you that Resolve 15 on my Hackintosh is far more stable and useable than Resolve 15 on my 2012 MBP…coincidence?

I have 14.3 and 15 running on a 2014 MBP without any crashes, and also on a desktop Hackintosh built in 2013 without any issues. His 2013 Mac Pro is far more powerful than my MBP, so I doubt that is the problem. He has something else going on. Try uninstalling Resolve, restart the computer, re-install. See if it crashes. If it does, provide the crash reports. BMD will tell him the reason.

I was responding directly to what someone else said. Don't just target me. If someone erroneously says you need a more powerful computer for 15 than 14.3 in this thread, and gives other wrong information based on misunderstood rumors, then it's prudent to correct that with the right information for the person that information was directed to and others who may be reading the thread and will base their decisions on the incorrect information.

Hey Guys,

Thx again for your inputs, it really helps considering what's relevant or not for my wish to upgrade...
Yep JC, I can wait actually, but as you could read I don't have time to test myself, therefore I'm asking questions about the first things I'll have to deal with after a potential upgrade... But yes I still can wait until June/July I'd say...

Kays, Mike Halper is right imho, the system Steve is running is supposed to be enough, and anyway better sized than a MBP. His only problem may be the 500D GPU which is < 700D GPU, but it's likely not the reason he has issues. Anyway, it's not at all "too far underpowered" as you wrote, for sure...
Or you just mixed up MP and MBP

Hi Sam,

I have R15b2 running on a 2015 iMac i7 with 4GB GPU and a new Hackintosh with no issues. It is worth reading some of the bug reports in this forum in case any bugs may affect your workflow. Initially I had some strange issues getting audio routing to work in Fairlight but everything is quite reliable now. I have had one or two 'quit without notice' events but I'm not sure what caused them.

I have freelanced on a few 2013 MacPro machines and found them to be slower and less reliable than the 2015 iMac. There is quite a history of the AMD Firepower GPU's being unreliable on these Mac Pro's.

Sam, when you do decide to upgrade, make sure you back up the v14 database before you install v15 just in case you need to go back. V15 upgrades the database on installation and is not backwards compatible.

I misread his system and thought it was a 2013 Mac Book Pro…or maybe confused it with someone else's post from another thread. I agree a Mac Pro is fine.

I didn't even look at the Resolve title tool. I don't know if it displays the actual font. But the Text+ in Fusion is quite good.
