Calibration for Computer Display in DaVinci Resolve 14.3

PostTue May 08, 2018 9:57 pm

I use an i1Pro to calibrate my NEC MultiSync PA271W wide gamut monitor.

All applications I use, Photoshop, Capture One Pro, automatically use the created calibration profile.

DaVinci Resolve doesn't seem to do that.

On page 661 it says I have to create a "dedicated color viewer LUT" for calibration.

And I have to use the 1D/3D Color Viewer Look-up table pop-up menu in the color management panel of the project settings.

What does this mean? What is 1D what is 3D - I opened up the 3D LUTs and saw many pre-fab settings, but no way to link to a custom calibration via i1Pro.

ALTERNATIVE

As an alternative it recommends "use Mac Display color profile for viewers" in the color management panel of project settings. I cannot find this setting in the color management panel.

As a professional photographer I have not been outside color managed system in many years.

If I cannot get this problem fixed - what use would color calibration have in DaVinci Resolve if I can't get the colors correctly displayed?

I am editing in FCP X , but would like to color correct in DaVinci Resolve. It would be great if you could give my a leg up on the DaVinci Color Management horse (which is so different from what I do in Photoshop and other applications)

My advice would be to not try to judge color from the GUI. Only use an external calibrated display through a color-managed output. This is covered on pages 667-668 of the Resolve 14.3 manual.

You can get the GUI better if it's externally calibrated, but I still wouldn't trust it for actual color correction.

Which means you need to buy one of the BM cards and connect it to your NEC display over HDMI.

I know I would have to use an external display.

But for now I'm only looking to color correct for the web.

My clients are fashion brands who show the films only on social media and on the web. No broadcast so far.

My goal is to get started with what I have and get a hang of DaVinci Resolve and its great adjustment tools.

I found the "use mac display color profile for viewers" in Preferences/hardware settings and set it.

I left the color management settings in the project settings alone and didn't change the gamma to 2.2 (should I?)

As I'll grow with DR, I'll upgrade my equipment.

I'm looking to get the most of what I have and avoid crazy things like a suddenly introduced cast in the shadows or in areas I have adjusted for neutral.

Any tips to "minimize the damage" and get a good match for the web are appreciated!
