Resolve behaviour after waking PC from sleep

PostSun Jun 03, 2018 5:44 pm

I understand that technically this isn't (or at least wasn't?) supported, but unlike Resolve 12, when 14 final was released it seemed to do much better in terms of staying functional after the system was woken after having been suspended.

The tables have turned again with Resolve 15: upon waking the system, audio is variously broken, the UI is variously broken (when fullscreened the menus stop functioning), and some actions cause Resolve to hang until killed.

Again I'm not sure if this is actually a supported workflow hence being light on the details, but I thought I'd mention it just to see if I'm alone here.

You're not alone... I've given up the idea of letting Resolve open when the computer goes to sleep.

Same goes for the submenus in the top menu line. I’m not able to use any of them after pc-sleep. Same goes for shutting down the program in a normal fashion.

Is this still valid? I mean, 2018, we have quite strong laptops that can edit 4k without any problems. Ironically, this “solution” only give us other problems when not editing. Say, you want to close the laptop lid for a couple of hours or maybe move the laptop without it overheating and/or eat up the battery.

Hmmm. I guess Davinci Resolve and laptops aren’t quite friends yet. It hardly compensate for something that I believe can be solved within the program itself. Hope they make a fix in the R15.

I would argue it's this job and Laptops that will never be friendly. The displays are too small, the keyboards suck, not enough internal hard drives...

This job needs a proper workstations, I believe.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Although I understand the laptop use-case, I have a proper workstation, I just put my PC to sleep when I'm done for the day. Saves a bunch of time in the morning booting and waiting for projects to load.

I understand BMD isn't too interested in supporting this. I just mentioned it because 14 seemed to be a lot better in this regard and something regressed in 15b1.

As convenient as putting a PC to sleep rather than switching it off at the end of working hours, a hugely resource-hungry apps like Resolve is the last one I'd leave up and running when doing so.

You can still use the advantages of putting your PC to sleep, but before you do always close Resolve properly. After all, opening it next morning only takes a minute or two, including loading the project!

Hi,
I love BMR but have to say its so annoying I can't leave my computer for a couple of hours and come back to it and continue working without having to go into control centre, close resolve then start again. WHY??

Hmmm.. Interesting feedback on the topic...

Jim Simons wrote:
News flash! its actually possible to use laptops with davinci resolve. There is also something called docking station where you can connect mouse, keyboards.. even big screens and hard drives with USBC (really fast I mind you). It’s fascinating :/ I’m not alone though. More and more are using powerful laptops these days (Yes they exist). Why? Because it’s more convenient if you want to stay mobile. I can start working in the field.. can you? Don’t be a dinosaur but stay hungry mate.

Piotr Wozniacki wrote:
I have used many programs that are just as taxing but don’t bug up after sleep. Now why is that? Is it possible that its fixable with resolve as well? I’m just as curious as the OP. Shouldn’t you be as well?

I’m one of those who advocate resolve in any situation possible, because I actually believe it’s the best tool for what it does. But I also like to be serious about it, and contribute to make it better. I believe the OP have the same idea.

Please take the topic serious. Because its relevant to many users. Even people with “proper” workstation.

I just wanted to mention that this seemed much better since b7 and b8 also looks good so far. Resolve so far fully functional after waking.

I wonder if others are finding the same improvement?
