Error Code 30 GPU Failed to Preform

PostWed Jun 13, 2018 10:01 pm

I am getting a lot of Error Code 30's today for some reason. I am mostly adding new clips to the timeline or moving around the timeline when it happens. Just before that i am working in the smart bins.

It seems to happen when I use the center wheel on my mouse to reposition the timeline. Or when select a bunch of clips and drag them around.

Do you have the 398.11 NVIDIA driver installed?

Is this driver tested by you?
Is it advised to go with it?

Yes I have the 398.11 NVIDIA driver install, should I roll back to the previous one?

(Also I just updated to beta 5 this morning and got the same error.)

Ok I just rolled back to 397.64 and I get the same error while moving around the timeline.

Next up I will try turning off the thumbnail view to see if that helps.

Do you need anything else from me like more log files?

Update: after turning off the thumbnail view for video tracks in the edit tab and editing for about 2 hours it has not crashed on me, when it was on (either setting) it would crash within a few minutes so that seems to be the linked issue with the GPU.

Also if I turn off the thumbnail view which almost fixes this issue, I can still get this error if I toggle back and forth quickly with the Next and Previous shortcuts quickly even with the thumbnails off.

Hi,
I get the same error and manage to reproduce it almost systematically. When it happens, Resolve needs to be restarted.

In summary, the error occurs when Resolve tries to generate many clip thumbnails in a short period of time.

In all tests below, the bins are populated with HEVC encoded clips taken with a GoPro, 4K@60FPS. Here is what I tested:

- Display the content of a bin with very few clips ==> no error whatever display mode (list or thumb)
- Display the content of a bin with 30+ clips in list view ==> no error
- Display the content of a bin with 30+ clips in thumb view mode, with big thumbs ==> no error, except if I scroll fast among clips
- Display the content of a bin with 30+ clips in thumb view mode, with tiny thumbs ==> always get the error after 10 to 20 thumbs have been generated

Config:
CPU Intel Core i9-7900X
64 GB RAM
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with NVidia drivers 398.11 (just upgraded to 398.36 without any difference)

Windows 10 x64 version 1803
DaVinci Resolve Studio 15.0.0B.057

Regards,
Emmanuel

If you go into Resolve Preferences - System - Configuration, and uncheck "Decode H.264/HEVC using hardware acceleration", save the prefs and restart Resolve, does that affect the situation?

Good workaround, the problem has gone unchecking hardware acceleration. However, as the thumb generation is now pretty slow (OK, rather make it slow than crashing Resolve...), it's somewhat annoying that it has to be redone each time I open a bin. May I suggest that the clip thumbnails / choosen poster frame be cached somehow once they have been successfully generated?
Thanks for helping,
Emmanuel

Also forgot to mention that unchecking the hardware acceleration option makes playback almost unusable without optimized media (although CPU caps at 30% usage)

Hi,
Beta 6 is out, but still have the same problem with hardware acceleration enabled. Is any fix expected?

OK I have installed version 6 and I have same hardware and drivers as before and the issue seems to have gone away! I say 'seems' because I have been only testing it for the past 10 minutes.

I have close to 1,000 clips on a 25 minute timeline with GoPro H.265 4k/60 and Sony XAVCS footage.

Thanks for fixing that, it is really nice to turn on the thumbnails again!

On a side note the speed of the thumbnail generation seems to be the same quick speed however I don't hear my 1080TI fan kick in during that process so it seems like you have made that more efficient on my GPU.

Update: after about 20 minutes of editing I got the error again. Going back to turning off thumbnail view.

beta 7 and the problem is still here. I know there is a workaround disabling hevc hardware acceleration but that make the process of working with HEVC footage a pain.
It really seems to be a problem with GPU memory management. Is a a fix planned?
At least please put video playback and thumbnail generation hardware acceleration as two separate options.
