Still import issue

PostTue Jun 19, 2018 3:16 am

When I import a group of stills, any file that has a number in its name has its name changed in the bin after import. eg "test 2 test" will come in as "test [2-2] test"
Should I be concerned that if I open up an old project thats been archived that resolve may not find the media due to that actual name not existing?

Also a major issue is that I have a sequence of stills that I want to import separately, not as a sequence and the function of show individual stills is missing from the media menu.

Also I cannot seem to set a duration for my still imports... my settings say stills will be 2 seconds but all come in as 1 frame.
Cheers

Before importing the stills into the media pool, set the three dot option in the media storage to treat sequential frames as separate clips.

Hi Peter,
Found it... it's now Show individual frames...and as you mentioned it has to be selected before import.
works fine.
A BIG THANKS

Any idea on the naming of stills on import as per my last thread ?

I’m not clear on what that issue is.

Hi Peter,
The issue with the naming as per my thread only occurs when you do not have "show individual frames" selected before import. I might also add that this menu item is not available in the media pool tabs while you are in the edit page or colour page it is only available in the media pool tab while you are viewing your drives.
This is why a lot of people are not finding it.
Because there is "media pool" functionality in the other tabs I and other people are obviously dragging media from the finder straight in. While this works for footage, when dragging any group of stills with numbers in the file name resolve attempts to bring them in as a sequence.

I’ve already posted about this missing feature
Resolve has to understand if we drag (from os window or from the Resolve gui) 1 frame (of an image sequence) or a group of frame (padded with the correct numeric sequence).
In case we decide to import from frame 0001 to 0850 (of 0999) Resolve has to ask us: do you want to import 850 single frames or a video sequence?
Two lines of code.

thanks!

Yes
We need to be able to set import as sequence or as still..

YES if set to "Show as individual frames"
I can load from the media pool to my bins

BUT
if I have a folder of stills
or a folder of folders of images (common for a documentary film)
there is no way to import all in one action
so that they are all stills (not sequence)

ALSO
if I drag a few images to the timeline they also will always come in as a sequence of images

Have a heart for the documentary film makers

we really need a default system setting for "import images as -> sequence or still"

Hi Wolfgang,

You have the precise functionality you are asking for, it just needs to happen in the MEDIA tab as it will not
function anywhere else.

Have the "Show as individual frames" selected before import.
Navigate to your folder within the media tab and not a browser and all should be good.

Re: Still import issue

thanks paul

but

this only works one folder deep
and for one folder at a time

if I have only one non nested folder - yes - all is good

but most doc projects came with many folders and nested ones
if I drag them in they will all become sequences no matter what the "show as individual frames" is set

e.g. imagine you are doing a doc
on the history of a person
I would have folders organized before I edit
(this is what I pay assistants to do)
by source (rights management)
by dates
by subject matter

I need to retain the organization that has been done

the fact that I cant import a large set of nested folder of images is a big problem (as stills)
-- also I know of no other edit platform that forces the default to sequence --in my experience
(imagine an edit system that turned all video in to .DNGs (yikes))

in fact _even_ importing pre organized video is not so evident
if you have nested folders one needs to drag the folders to the bin listing
-- if you want to retain the folder structure
if you drag from the media storage to the top of the media pool it will not retain the folder structure
(that took a while to figure out)

my hope is that the pref system will allow at some point a switch for a default "import as individual frames" toggle...

this is not a big issue yet - in general
as the documentary world doesn't use or think of Resolve as a usable edit system --> yet
(most are still on FCP7)

but they are coming
I know a number of film schools are looking at Resolve
as there are many who dislike Premiere (even if it is becoming the default)

thanks

I agree that it's odd that Resolve doesn't have a setting to set the default behaviour so that nested folders of images can be brought in as images. This is a huge miss that one would think was pretty low-hanging fruit. Let's hope BMD listens.

Hi again Wolfgang,
Perhaps pay your assistant to get the folders organised in a resolve project while sorting your doco media :))

No only joking... and agree with you.
I have used premiere and like dragging folders straight into my project however there were some formats that would not come in as they needed to go through the media browser.

Resolves edit is a little clunky in this area along with a few others (like keyframes for OFX plugins) but I have accepted that it will get there and am sticking to it now. Studio 15 b5 is fairly solid on my system and am really enjoying the colour tab... it's power along with fusion integrated makes premiere look like a toy :)
