A simple question no one at BMD can answer...

PostFri Jun 22, 2018 7:51 pm

Our new "editing cat" walked across a keyboard causing a rule of thirds-type grid to pop up ONLY on the external monitor on one machine. We can't figure out how to shut it off (three hours and multiple people looking).

The external monitor is fed by a mini-monitor 4k. We're unable to find anything in any documentation online, or anywhere else and the telephone support staff at BMD also have no idea. Finally, we were told by "Gilbert," "we can't help you with workflow questions." Clearly, under no definition of the term is this a "workflow question."

So I turn to you all, seeking help. This rule of thirds grid is tied to this one project alone; opening up other projects, it goes away. Open up the project in question again, and it's back.

How do we shut this off? "Editing cat" has been moved to another room in the interim...

View>Safe Area

See if it's turned on. The choices are either UI or UI + external, so that doesn't seem to fit your case, but may be worth trying anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion - been there, done that, no dice. There's no UI or UI + external option here either, fwiw.

The damn grid is still there.

Thanks Dwaine.

Here's a link to download the DRP:

And here's Simon, the knucklehead responsible:

We can FedEx him over to you - perhaps you can get him to tell you what he did.

FWIW, now that grid is showing on all projects (we have a lot going on in house, and bounce in and out of different projects all the time).

I've loaded the project on a Mac and a Windows system and don't see what you are describing on the video output.

I notice you have dual link selected. You should have single link selected in Video Monitoring. Try that and see if that has any effect (I doubt it...).

Is there some reason you have 59.9 monitoring selected for a 24 frame timeline? Ideally, you'd want them to match.

On the project you sent, do you see the grid on all 3 timelines, anywhere in the timeline?

It might be good to exit Resolve and load a clip in Media Express and see what that looks like. If you see the same effect there, it might be a card or monitor issue.

Don't know how dual link go turned on; but put it to single link and no difference (we're not using SDI for this outboard monitor anyway).

The reason for 59.94 being selected is the outboard monitor doesn't understand 24p (or 23.96), so we use 59.94, and let DaVinci do a reverse 3:2 pulldown to allow the monitor to work properly.

Yeah, it WAS on all 3 timelines.

Somehow, it's disappeared. We haven't restarted this machine or anything.

I guess I'll chime in if it comes back.
