Audio Cutting Out

While watching short clips the audio is cutting in and out which makes it impossible to edit. I can't resolve this - any advice?

I've had this happen where audio cuts out or is at the wrong speed, especially with mp3 music tracks.
My "fix" was to either render a rough edit and import that file (ie a quicktime) as a source for further edits or to confirm that the frame rate, is set to match the source with the project I'm editing.

I'm a newcomer to Resolve 14, but have non-linear editng experience going back to 2006.
