BUG Varicam s35 clips have problematic behaviour in Color

PostMon Jul 09, 2018 4:31 pm

the are C4K clips. My GPU memory is quite far from full according to task Manager but the clips are not responsive with noise reduction and a few power windows added. The Node icons frequently turn green followed by the image in the viewer.

A project export .drp and sample clip showing the issue would be helpful.

I can provide a .drp but the clip is a long interview. Let me see whether I can make it happen with a shorter garbage clip.

I've played with short clips and have been unable to duplicate the problem. The interview source clip it happened with was 45 minutes long

Dwaine,

Here's a screen cap of what it looks like

Your log shows a GPU mem error.

Loading your project here instantly runs out of GPU mem on my 1050Ti, which only has 4GB of VRAM.

Looks like you have a lot of GPU mem intensive things going on in the timeline.

If you do a Project Save As, and change the timeline res to HD, and then save that, and restart Resolve and load the HD timeline version of the project, do you get the error?

I'm willing to try that BUT I have to point out that I'm similarly manipulating a 5.k 5632x2948 Red clip without any overrun of my 11GB GPU mem.

The problem clip is only 4096X2160. So why there's GPU memory issues with it and not with the RED clips is a bit of a mystery. The difference between them is codec and length The Red clip is 5 minutes long, the Varicam 35 clip is 23 minutes. Could codec and/or length bear on this?

Does your 5K Red clip project have multiple video tracks and clips with dual TNR nodes? And other clips with multiple OFX nodes? On a 4K timeline?

I've loaded your project on a Mac with a Titan X GPU. It has more VRAM than your scenario, and it's not experiencing any issues. It has 11GB of free VRAM after initialization, and you have 9GB free. Not a huge difference, but maybe enough if something is close to the edge.

Something else to check: Make sure you don't have SLI mode enabled for the 2 cards.

Another thing to try: If you have Resolve Preferences - System - Configuration: "Decode H.264/HEVC using hardware acceleration" checked, uncheck that, save the prefs and restart Resolve and see if that changes anything.

Yes. Just to be clear both the Red 5.6k clip and the Varicam 35 4k clip are on single layers. the layers above them are reference layers and turned off. The Red clip has two TNR layers, the Varicam clip has only one with a much simpler node tree. Yet it is the one giving the GPU error.

SLI mode is disabled.

I'll try turning HEVC/H264 hardware decoding off as AVC Intra does use H264 technology. I'll let you know if that does make a difference

I updated the settings, turning off HEVC/H264 hardware decoding. The performance seems better and the Program Monitor has not changed to green. However, FYI, the node images have.

I spoke too soon. Some more adjustments and whamo to the Program Monitor!

The problem DOES seem to be cumulative as GPU fills up and perhaps is not released or consolidated with H.264 files.

Have you tried a test with the timeline set to HD?

Next, and academic step for testing, as I have little doubt that will do the trick.

OTOH for actual work on the project I'll stick with 4k, as its a project that's dependent on very detailed imagery, and I'll restart when I have to.

A 2k (2048x858) timeline does behave better in that the Program Monitor doesn't turn green after a lot of color work on that clip. However this does happen to the nodes:

This is with h.264 GPU decoding turned off. So possibly the codec is a contributing factor?
