beta6 subtitle question/feature request

PostWed Jul 18, 2018 5:58 pm

dear bm, dear all!

i am just experimenting with the new subtitle workflow, and i am wondering why only ONE SUBTRACK AT A TIME can be viewed?

in practically every movie there are normal and italic subtitle, italic for things that happen in the off. but i don't know how this is achievable in DR15?

if there would be one italic track and one normal one, both viewable at the same time, this would work. or, perhaps even better, there would be a possibility to mark italic parts in one caption.

do you agree? did i miss something?

and plz support the rather standard formats like STL, which eg avid exports!

apart from that, THANKS! once thiese things work i will be a very happy new subtitle-workflow-user ;)

and please let's try to support each other. i am reading the manuals since DR7 and i am using it since then, so please let's stay productive and polite.

The subtitle function is still a bit of a mess.
If you go for embedded subtitles, most formatting options don't work at all, while burn-in gives you much more flexibility. The manual is not explaining the differences very well.

IMHO, BM should give us the option to 'tell' the subtitle tool what we plan to export with a checkbox and switch off features that don't work accordingly.

But for the time being, I'd advise you to use serious third-party subtitle tools. Don't get me wrong, I'd really appreciate if this new feature is fully functioning, but it's not there yet.

Hey guys, is the Subtitle Template functional AT ALL in Beta7? It looks like an interesting option to use and from what I read, the idea is to drag the template from the Effects Library onto a video track which DR should create, but it doesn't. I can also right-click on the track headings on the left and select "Add Subtitle Track" but nothing happens. If I add a normal video track and drag the Subtitle template there, it just vanishes into thin air. Is this Studio version only perhaps? Or am I missing something?

AFAIK there are no templates for subtitles, only for titles.

As the manual clearly states, Resolve can only import .srt files for subtitles, a quite common format. For testing purposes you should be able to find some on the web, normally you get these from service bureaus.

You can also write your own inside of Resolve once you have created a subtitle track. It's called "Create Caption" in the inspector. Works for me, with some restrictions described above.

Alexis van Hurkman explains the whole process in his videos from rippletraining if the manual doesn’t suffice.

you also need to have the timeline show subtitle tracks via the toolbar menu, which it doesn't do by default

Indeed Tom, that did the trick, thanks! The template works now. For other users, it's this toolbar here:

Once a subtitle track exists, you can just right-click into it.
