B7: Paint in fusion broken

PostFri Aug 03, 2018 10:28 am

Hi,

I noticed upgrading from B6 to B7 that paint in fusion has broken.

In my case I use it to animate a write-on effect on a title.
So I have a background->paint and then a text node connected to a merge with the paint node.
In the project I created in B6 this worked fine, after upgrade to B7 the text write on effect was gone. So I started investigating it. While doing this I noticed that when selecting the paint node in the inspector it just say <No object selected>. So I removed the paint node and created a new and recreated the polygon. While resolve was open this worked fine and I was able to access its properties just fine. But as soon as I close resolve and reopen the project I get <No object selected> for the paint node. Even though I cant access the properties of the paint node it seems that all changes I made stuck as the write-on effect worked this time, even after restart.

I then created a new test project with B7 and just added a clip, went into fusion and added a background with a paint, didn't change any properties on the nodes, just added them. Closed resolve and restarted it, same here, <No object selected> again for this clean new B7 created project. So should be fairly easy to replicate.

This is - more or less - expected behavior. In Fusion after you've created a paint stroke it's effectively 'moved' to the modifier tab, making room for the next paint stroke in your tool panel/inspector. When you reopen a comp, there is usually no stroke active/selected (especially when you're in selection mode) which would explain why you couldn't access it. Going into the modifier tab and selecting the stroke or selecting the stroke in the viewer will make it active again, so you can change its parameters.

Going into modifiers and selecting the stroke did indeed work, thanks.

I dont think this was the bahavior in B6 though, maybe it loaded the last stroke used. But I cant be 100% sure, maybe it was the same behavior in B6. In any case the solution to go into modifiers and selecting it works great.

I am having a similar issue. I have created several fusion tags for tracking items in the video and most of them work fine. But at some point, the product started showing the Object note selected in the MaskPaint tool, and there is nothing in the Modifiers.

What I am trying to do is create several screenshots with items in them that have one tag in each screenshot for one of the items, then I copy that screenshot and move the tag to the next item, and so on. Right now I have ~10 of them that are working, but after that, it started this No object selected and now I am unable to modify the maskpaint.

I'm a newbie to Resolve but I have the same issue; that I can not add paint strokes to a previously fine fusionclip after closing and then reopening the project i.e. next day. Tried all the suggestions above and unless I do all the work on a clip before exiting (which is not always practical) I'm stuck with working round this issue. Not sure if this is connected but randomly, after this and other errors in fusion, timeline playback freezes but menu items can be selected. I like Resolve very much and maybe I am missing something as a new user but I feel I'm spending more time finding out what the workarounds are than producing output at the moment.

Yup I have to agree
Paint node and Mask Paint seem horribly broken. I even found that you can't add a second new node to pick up with. There seems to be a problem with how the memory is used on these nodes. Also going back to a worked on node you no longer can edit the strokes. Please fix
I also sometimes have an issue where the input / loader nodes become corrupt - the workaround is to do something pointless to footage on the fusion timeline which forces the node to update.

Please fix Blackmagic along with the colour management issue with using Fusion in anything other Rec709 - it seems odd that both the VDU and my Pro output via a Blackmagic 4K extreme can't be managed.

These issues are having a real impact on being able to work on the Fusion page in Davinci.

Please fix them urgently

Thanks
R
