Regarding the pocket camera's recording to SD cards....

The fastest SD card, the Sandisk extreme SDXC, will write at 90 megabytes per second in burst mode.

10 bit 4:4:4 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 190 MB per second.

10 bit 4:2:2 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 127 MB per second.

Therefore the fastest SD card is not fast enough. So how will they get around this?

Haven't you learned from the "Europe" fiasko with the BMCC v1 that you really should order somewhere else? *grin*

Either way, I'd prefer to avoid international shipping and import tax issues. It's not like I don't have a BMCC to play with until CVP gets their BMPC orders in ;)

Not to mention a new Davinci Resolve 10 coming out as well (and probably being included with the BMPC)...
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6674

EDIT: At $1000 more for the 4k version, the 2.5k BMCC now seems like a bad purchase considering it was delivered so late. Although we still need to see how the compressed RAW / lower DR pans out.

Assuming the new camera won't be available until the summer, which gives you a few months of making money with the camera. Add to that all your accessories and lenses will fit the new one, the fact it cost so very little in the first place and you will be able to resell it to upgrade when the new one is available, then you probably shouldn't be too angry.

We paid for our BMD camera in the first two jobs.

Enjoy the revolution, ALL of this was unthinkable 18 months ago

Plus we don't know yet whether there is an upgrade path for BMCC owners

What an unusual feeling!!!!
2 new camaeras... and the first Black magic camera is not even finished.... is that the reason why we havent get any firmware update..... with audio levels and so on.... & The BM MFT not been produce yet and already obsolete... for a smaller and cheaper camera....

By the specs on the web it seems that they have managed to retain 12 stops of dinamic range with global shutter! I hope this is true and not just paper facts.

I have had my BMCC Ef only for a month and a half... any trade-in program? :D

...seems to support framerates up to 59.95i in HD, 30 frames in 4K (ProresHQ or CinemaDNG).

Software included is the Resolve lite version only..... 12 stops sounds really much for global shutter

1080p60i? So its interlaced for direct broadcast, progressive for NLE? Im confused on that spec. Other than that if it really does ship in July its going to be tough to not sell my V1.

I can't say I'm angry or annoyed having recently received my 2.5K camera. I love shooting with it and learning about the intricacies of the workflow.

A bird in the hand beats two in the bush. As far as seeing these on the ground, I'll believe the July shipping update when I see it, but I'm more than happy to not worry about having one to shoot with.

"Compressed cinemaDNG" 4k 240gb - 36min
makes me think...
Could this be implemented to our current BMCC via firmware?
Let´s speculate* -> 2.5k 240gb - between 90 to 120 min?

*in fact there's nothing much to do but speculate until BM says something more. ;)

I don't believe I've seen this posted here anywhere...

Here is one press release:

Blackmagic Design Announces Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

NAB 2013, Las Vegas, USA - April 8, 2013 - Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, a beautifully designed, pocket sized digital cinema camera that includes powerful features such as Super 16mm sized 1080HD sensor, super wide 13 stops of dynamic range, built in SD card recorder for Apple ProRes, lossless compressed CinemaDNG RAW capture and active Micro Four Thirds lens mount, all in an attractive compact design for only US$995.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2013 booth at #SL218.

Since the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera was launched at NAB 2012, it has been celebrated by industry professionals for its amazing film look and accurate and cinematic color. The new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has most of the features of its bigger brother, including its feature film look, but has been redesigned with a dramatically smaller size that is less than an inch thick and can be held easily in your hand.

This compact design allows the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to be used in more situations where a larger camera would not be practical. It’s so small that it can be used in situations in the field where a larger camera could be dangerous. The camera’s film look even allows personal video to be shot with the style and creativity of a motion picture film!

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera features an industry standard Super 16 sensor size, so it’s perfect when using Super 16 cine lenses via MFT adapters, as the shooting experience is the same as using the same lens on a Super 16 film camera. The 13 stops of dynamic range look of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is almost identical to shooting on a professional Super 16 film camera. The Micro Four Thirds lenses offer a wide range of low cost lenses with amazing image quality, and they are compatible with mount adapters such as PL mounts for large lens and professional motion picture film rigs.

One of the most important features of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is its super wide dynamic range of 13 stops, allowing feature film quality images. A common mistake in the television industry is the assumption that more resolution means higher quality. Most cameras, even ones with higher than HD resolution, can produce"video" looking images that suffer from highlight and black clipping that limits details. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera's wide dynamic range eliminates this problem and provides film quality with dramatically more detail retained in black and whites in the image. Once the shoot is complete, DaVinci Resolve Lite color correction software can be used to adjust images and take advantage of this extra range in the images.

To eliminate the damage that low bit depth and high compression video storage creates, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes a easy to use SD card recorder that allows the full sensor dynamic range to be recorded in professional ProRes 422 (HQ) format, as well as 12 bit Log RAW lossless compressed CinemaDNG format. These files can be read by high end video software as they are all open standard. In addition to the regular CinemaDNG RAW format, Blackmagic Design will also be implementing a QuickTime wrapper for the open standard CinemaDNG and companion codec, allowing the camera to record in a format that allows RAW editing in popular editing software.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has been designed as the perfect companion to editing software such as Final Cut Pro X and Avid Media Composer. Unlike other cameras, which require the use of custom video file formats, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes absolutely no custom video file formats, and every file type included is open standard.

The built in large LCD display makes focus easy, and allows playback of captured files. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes a built in microphone, as well as external jack based mic/line level balanced audio connections. When reviewing recorded clips, audio can be played through the built in speaker and routed through the headphone port or micro HDMI output. The HDMI output includes all camera data such as timecode, transport control, shutter angle, color temperature setting and ASA information overlaid in attractive anti aliased fonts.

"This is an extremely exciting camera and its been amazing to work on. Our original Blackmagic Cinema Camera was small, but this new model is so much smaller than the original, we almost cannot believe it features very similar image quality," said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. "We think customers are going to really enjoy this new model and use it both personally and professionally. It’s going to allow shooting in situations that could never have been achieved at this quality level previously. It’s also going to be the camera that thousands of new up and coming cinematographers use as their first camera for their independent films. It’s going to be exciting!"

Or this either...

Blackmagic Design Announces Blackmagic Production Camera 4K

NAB 2013, Las Vegas, USA - April 8, 2013 - Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, a new high resolution 4K digital film camera with an innovative large Super 35 size sensor with professional global shutter, combined with precision EF mount optics and high quality Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) file recording for only US$3,995.

Blackmagic Production Camera 4K will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2013 booth at #SL218.

The latest high end televisions and video projectors support Ultra HD, which is four times the resolution of regular HD video. The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K shoots to high quality compressed CinemaDNG RAW and ProRes 422 (HQ) files in 4K, giving customers a complete solution to shoot the most amazing high resolution music videos, episodic television production, television commercials, sports, documentaries, news stories, interviews and feature films.

The new Blackmagic Production Camera 4K also supports the new 6G-SDI video connection out so it can be used on live video production.

Blackmagic Production Camera 4K has been designed with portability and durability in mind. With standard connections and an internal battery packed inside a beautiful machined aluminum design, the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K will easily handle the rigors of location work. A high resolution LCD display shows settings such as shutter speed, color temperature, aperture and timecode in an easy to read status strip. The built in capacitive touchscreen offers direct access to menus with a touch of the finger and allows changing settings such as recording format, shutter angle and more. The touchscreen also allows users to enter important metadata that is compatible with popular video editing software including Final Cut Pro X.

With a large Super 35 size sensor, cinematographers get familiar framing and behavior from the lenses they already own. This camera sensor features a global shutter and its large size allows minimal crop factor so cinematographers get nice wide angle shots from their wide angle lenses. When working in HD customers can use the high resolution images to reframe and zoom into shots without any quality loss.

With the built in EF compatible lens mount there is a wide choice of optics to take advantage of the large Super 35 size sensor without cropping. Cinematographers get the choice of the world's most amazing optics from leading lens crafters like Canon, Zeiss and more, with full electronic control. The EF compatible lens mount means customers are not locked into a specific lens and even professional cinema lenses with EF mount with professional rails and follow focus accessories can be used.

The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K easily captures 4K in compressed CinemaDNG RAW and ProRes 422 (HQ) using the built in high speed SSD recorder. Once the shoot has wrapped, the disk can be connected to a computer for editing or color correction of the shots straight from the disk, which can be formatted in either HFS+ or ExFAT for Mac and Windows compatibility. In addition to the regular CinemaDNG RAW format, Blackmagic Design will also implement a QuickTime wrapper for the open standard CinemaDNG and companion codec, allowing the camera to record in a format that allows RAW editing in popular editing software.

The wide dynamic range of the Super 35 sized sensor can be mapped into the quantizing range of the file so you can color grade shots to allow greater detail in highlights and shadows. When working fast, the customer can also record to regular Rec. 709 video files.

Blackmagic Production Camera 4K uses standard connections, so customers do not need to worry about sourcing custom cables. The camera features 6G-SDI output that can be down-converted to HD or used for amazing quality Ultra HD video. In addition, the device includes a built-in Thunderbolt port and UltraScope software for real time waveform monitoring. For audio you get 1/4” jack mic/line inputs plus 12V to 30V DC input, a 3.5mm headphone socket and LANC remote control. And with a built-in uncompressed audio recorder you can eliminate post audio synching altogether.

“Customers have been asking us to design a camera with global shutter and a large sensor. With the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K we have delivered that, plus the high resolution needed for the latest Ultra HD production work,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “This is a very exciting camera and it produces amazing looking pictures that we are sure everyone will love. It’s going to allow Ultra HD programming to be simple and easy!”

Is it possible that since the form factor, and many other components are similar to the original BMCC, that it will ship this coming July? That'd be nuts.

I just read on John Brawley's blog that there are plans to implement compressed DNG raw across all 3 cameras. .the BMCC, BMPC, and BM4K.. JB states that the BMCC and pocket cam is basically a shrunk down version of the BMCC with the same sensor cropped to S16.. removable batteries.. and an active MFT mount.. I'm really digging this camera!! Plus is records on SD cards! He did mention since the pocket cam is so munch smaller than the BMCC it's more prone to rolling stutter..
I'm definitely going to keep my eye on the Pocket Cinema camera and pick that sucker up when it's available!

I wonder if there's going to be any announcement of a firmware update for current owners of the BMCC... I mean, they've only released one so far, and I remember them talking about how they have this reputation for constantly updating their products...

I love my BMCC! I just would love to see that we're still being supported after owing the camera for only 2 months! ;)

I second this concern...why would it not have this!? Not a good idea to isolate pc users...wont be buying if it does not include dnxhd.

Can't provide something that doesnt exist. 4K DnxHD doesn't exist so it cant be provided by a camera.

Hey man, .... you're busy but def next year!

You mentioned Cash&Credit...are they selling gear here?

I'm looking to buy some gear and was hoping for show specials and such...but no one is selling gear at the show :/ B&H and Adorama will take Internet orders but that's it.

I would really like to pick up some Sandisk SSDs and a battery solution...so if you know anyone at the show or just in Vegas I'd appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction!

Cheers

Does anyone know if it'll be possible to use electronic EF lenses on the pocket camera? Any adapters (that don't cost more than the camera itself)?
I'd get the pocket in a heart beat, but I already have a collection of EF glass and don't want to buy anymore lenses.

Ordered EF mount from B&H on 08/19/12. Received on 04/12/13.

I love my BMCC! I just would love to see that we're still being supported after owing the camera for only 2 months! ;)

There was BMCC firmware 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 already. Chances are good more is to come, but no guarantees.

I never said anything about 4k...simple same codeck as version one would benifit to a higher degree due to no rolling shutter and larger censor.

DNxHD wasn't included in original BMCC firmware, but was added later. No guarantees, but theoretically something similar could happen with the new cam(s), too.

Ahhh yes, you are correct... I guess I didn't count 1.0 and 1.1 because they came out when only beta testers had cameras! Ha!

That may not be as simple as it sounds. As the other Peter says above it could be added, but in my experiences smaller resolutions from a sensor often come at a greater price than just the resolution drop.

If they use REDs route for lower resolution (which is less processor intensive) then you wouldn't get the larger sensor, you would get 1/4 of the area of the sensor, this I think may have been the method used in the BMCC for its 2k but thats a much smaller leap. Downscalling can be quite intensive to do well as line skipping can do nasty things to a image.

If learning a new workflows to much for you then no BM camera looks like a good fix as all will need colour correction to use.

THis cameras reason for existing is to provide RAW, adding

mhmmm.. John Brawley's words on the Production model don't sound that enthusiastic... It seems he likes the Pocket version more. Also - the 4K version may not have RAW at first, only ProRes

http://johnbrawley.wordpress.com/2013/0 ... e-orginal/

I am not sure a loss in DR and ISO sensitivity is such a good thing for the BMPC. I'll wait and see what the test shots look like and I'll keep my pre-order until then, but if the BMPC really is noticeably worse in DR and low light performance, I'll cancel the pre-order and stick with the BMCC. It's the real make-or-break issue for me... The rest (larger sensor, global shutter, 4K DNG, 4K ProRes etc.) sounds great.

BMD made it clear there will be no MFT Production Camera. The sensor's too big. John Brawley said on his blog that they may do a PL mount later.

I did the math and a little experiment to prove to myself that there was no hope for an MFT. It's true -- the sensor is too big. Take a look:

I think the Production Camera is going to be a great adjunct to the Cinema Camera as an action camera. For those shots that need to capture fast-moving objects or fast camera motions, and DR is of secondary importance.

Does anyone know if the HyperDeck Shuttle will have any issues recording from the Production Camera?

I ordered the BBCC day 1 when announced at NAB last year, took delivery last month, and is already superseded??

I haven't been one to comment on the lack of communication and issues to do with delivery of the cameras over the past year, I get there were production issues that were less than ideal. Fair enough. Also the new cameras are pretty amazing, the design/specs for the price point is revolutionary. Awesome. But as a patient, loyal customer, it's hard to not feel more than a little screwed over here. Obviously they were hard at work on the NEXT camera, while the camera we were waiting for still had/has so many issues. I love what they are doing with their new products, but I have a 1 month old camera I would not have purchased today had I known. But I didn't buy it today, I paid a year ago! They would be better working on a solid camera and supporting it rather than chase the next hot spec in my opinion. It's not a business model for a loyal long term customer base, there is value in looking after customers. But I get that if you can make the next camera now, why wait, just I am sure I am not alone in feeling a ****** this morning, when I should be excited about the new gear. Engineering wise, awesome news. Customer relations wise, very poor form.

+1. The more I think about it, the more pissed off I am. I considered returning my camera and holding out for something else, because at this rate I don't want to buy a 4k camera, get it the weekend before NAB 2014 and have a 2 day old camera thats outdated like my V1 is today.

That's why I am pre-ordering, but not holding my breath to see anything anytime soon. If something comes along in July, I'll consider it. Otherwise I'll drop my pre-order and keep using my BMCC until the next revision.
