eGPU & H.264 Playback w/External 4K Display

PostSat Aug 11, 2018 1:48 pm

Hey Guys!

I am running a 2017 MacBook Pro with an i7, 16BG of RAM, and 2GB GPU. Resolve runs WAY faster than Premiere, but I still do notice when driving my 4K display, playback goes from usually a solid 24fps at 1/4 res. to like 6 or 8fps....I'm assuming based on looking at my iStat Menus that it is the GPU which's memory seems to almost be maxed, along with Processes, ESPECIALLY considering my CPU never gets above like 65-75%!

I'm thinking of picking up the BMD eGPU. Does anyone think this will make a substantial playback difference? I know 16GB of RAM isn't the best, and definitely gets up there, but I "refresh" it often during editing, which works perfectly. Even when using optimized media or Cached timelines, playback suffers with my GH5 H.264 footage.

Anyone have any experience using an eGPU and it's playback difference?
